Have you ever heard of the term ‘monkey mind?’ It originates from ancient Chinese and Japanese Buddhist teachings. We all experience it from time to time. In contrast to thinking clearly, monkey mind feels restless, unsettled, unfocused and uncontrollable. We think too much about the next text message, passing an exam, being able to pay next month’s bills, and whatever else lies in our fear centers.
This state of mind can take over if not managed, resulting in high anxiety. We lose our ability to think or to connect with what lies beneath these runaway thoughts. As a child I always enjoyed visiting the English Tudor homes open to the public, particularly Hampton Court, which had a maze to run into, hide in the hedgerow, get to the centre and then find my way back out. Hearing the cackle and playful squealing of other children, even bumping into others as I turned a corner, and encountering many dead ends en-route to the centre, made for a thrilling experience.
I also remember at the circus being in a maze of the hall of mirrors and trying to find my way through so many weird reflections of myself. Frustration would rise up inside of me as joy turned to brief concern or panic. Later I moved to solving mazes in the puzzle books.
There is a distinct difference between a maze and a labyrinth. Mazes are often thought to have, in earnest been established circa 13th century, with one of the most famous being Hampton Court in England. Yet, in fact, maze-like structures were found under buildings from the Roman Empire days, and even used around castles in Medieval Europe to confuse the enemy. So, mazes demonstrated or represented a challenge, it creates the potential for confusion through its many changes in direction and dead ends, forcing one to retrace ones steps. The ‘Higher Self’ is a term associated with multiple belief systems, but the basic premise describes an eternal, omnipotent, conscious, and an intelligent being, who is one’s real self. We are after all spiritual beings having a human experience.
Helena Blavatsky, the famous spirit medium and co-founder of the Theosophical Society, formally defined the higher self as ‘Atma – the inseparable ray of the Universe and one self.’
It is important to discern the higher self from ego. The higher self is concerned with your spiritual development and the choices you make that align with your true spiritual self. Empaths are very easily affected by other people’s feelings and emotions, so their energy levels are highly susceptible to their energetic environment. Therefore it is vital that empaths learn to properly shield themselves from unwanted negative energy.
So how do you stop unwanted negativity from entering your energy system? How do you comfortably go through your day not being a sponge for all the feelings, emotions and energy of others? It is actually quite easy to shield yourself and maintain your boundaries once you practice a little.
First, you can cleanse your own aura when you get home with sage smudge sticks, or smokeless sage mist to remove any unwanted energy from your day. Spirituality is unique to every individual. Some people experience an overwhelming feeling of the Divine within, while some do not get any feeling whatsoever. Many clients ask me how they can get closer to God, or connect with spirit, or even get that feeling of serene tranquility while meditating.
To experience a deeper sense of spiritual connection try one or more of the following strategies in your spiritual practice:

Thoughts are a very important aspect in life. If you are having a good thought, you’re having a good day. If you are having a bad thought, you are having a bad day. Thoughts are vital in our daily life design. Thoughts can make you, or break you.
It all starts with your thinking. You can decide if you’re going to be having a good day, or bad day. You are the only one who can decide if you are going to think negative or positive thoughts. You alone own the power of your thoughts.
Think about it. You could be having the greatest day in your life and all of a sudden you think of something negative and the good day just turned into an awful day. You alone have the power to control your thoughts. Only you know your thoughts. You also have the power to share them, or to keep them to yourself. Your thoughts are yours. Anyone can call on the angels to help them in any situation. Carl Jung called the angels, “The thoughts of God.” You do not have to belong to a specific religion or denomination to ask the angels for assistance and guidance. They are unconditional love manifested into form and can help us through all our challenges.
One thing that I have found useful on my own journey of forgiveness is to engage the angels in my own forgiveness work.
Try this brief invocation to ask the angels for guidance on your healing journey:
Holy Mother, Holy Father God, Light and Love of the Universe, I ask today for assistance with my path. I ask for the angels to surround me and fill me with the light of truth.
With so many unexpected world events recently, a lot of people are feeling stressed, dismayed, worried and anxious. In such perilous times as we are currently facing, it is vitally important to practice self-care.
What do I mean by self-care? From an intuitive’s point of view, after years of working in the psychic field, I have learned that it is important to take care of yourself first and foremost. Is it selfish? Definitely not. It is selfish to take care of everyone else around you, without taking care of you first. You will not have anything to give of yourself if you do not give to yourself first.
It is like being on an airplane, and when the plane is going down, the oxygen masks come down. If there is a child with you or a frail, elderly person, it is best to put the oxygen mask on yourself first and then the child or other person.
