The Spiritual Power Of A Good Night’s Sleep

When I do psychic readings, one of the first things I look into is my client’s aura. I can often tell right away whether they’re getting enough good sleep because their energy shows it. A bright, balanced aura usually means they’re well-rested and recharged. A dull or scattered energy field often points to sleep deprivation.

Of course, low energy can come from many things like poor diet, emotional stress, or people who unknowingly drain your energy. But in my experience, the most common and overlooked reason is simply: lack of sleep. When you don’t get enough rest, it affects every part of your life. You feel tired, irritable, and disconnected from your inner light.

Good sleep supports your intuition, sharpens your awareness, and raises your energy. It feeds not only your physical body but also your energetic systems like the aura, chakras, and etheric field. Without enough rest, your psychic senses can get foggy, your emotions may feel harder to manage, and your connection to spiritual guidance can weaken.

Over time, the effects build up. You might feel emotionally off, mentally scattered, or forgetful. You may even notice physical signs like higher blood pressure. If this goes on too long, it can lead to more serious problems like depression. You may start to feel hopeless, like everything is a struggle. Your energy dims, your joy fades, and your spiritual spark gets low.

I remember a client whose sister was showing early signs of heart disease. During the session, spirit clearly shared the message that her sister needed to rest more. She was juggling a full-time job and raising a child as a single parent, rarely having much time to truly rest. Her exhaustion had turned into chronic stress, mood swings, guilt, and a painful sense of disconnect from herself and her loved ones.

That session stayed with me. I felt guided to look into what spirit had shown me, and I found medical studies linking long-term sleep loss with heart disease. It was a powerful reminder that rest is not optional. That message wasn’t just for her sister. It was also for me. I knew I needed to start giving my own body, mind, and spirit the deep rest I deserve.

Sleep As A Spiritual Practice

Have you ever wondered why we actually need to sleep? You’re not alone, and nobody knows for sure. Despite all the progress in sleep science, the ultimate reason we spend almost a third of our lives sleeping remains one of the great mysteries of life!

Scientists have proposed many interesting theories of why we sleep that are backed by evidence. Most people agree that sleep has many important functions. But even though scientists are studying biology and brainwaves, they often ignore one important thing: the spiritual purpose of sleep.

When we sleep, especially during the Rapid Eye Movement (REM) stage, we enter an altered state of consciousness where the veil between worlds thin. We dream, astral travel, and receive messages from our guides, ancestors, and higher self. This nightly journey is vital for our spiritual growth, insight and healing.

The quality of our sleep is directly tied to our spiritual well-being. A restless night might not just be a physical issue but a sign of spiritual imbalance or unresolved energetic issues that need to be addressed. Therefore, spiritual practices should be used to intentionally prepare our mind, body, and spirit for a night of physical rest and spiritual work.

There are several important spiritual reasons why we sleep:

Receiving divine guidance and messages. When we are in the deepest stages of sleep, we temporarily reunite with the spirit realm and the divine. When your conscious mind and ego are quiet, it becomes easier to receive intuitive messages, healing energy, and higher wisdom. This altered state of awareness lets us receive guidance from our higher self, ancestors, spirit guides, angels and higher power.

Connecting with the universal consciousness. During sleep, our personal awareness connects with the collective consciousness and the Akashic Records or the universal mind. This sacred connection allows us to receive metaphysical downloads, inspiration, and insight. It’s often the case that solutions come after a good night’s rest.

Astral projection and soul journeying. During the deepest stage of sleep, called Rapid Eye Movement (REM), our astral body leaves the physical body to explore other realms and connect with other souls. These journeys help us grow, learn, and meet up with loving spirit beings like guides, angels, or ascended masters. During REM sleep we have the most vivid, story-like dreams that are not random at all, but reflections of where our soul has been while the body rests. The dreams we remember later are often fragments of these spiritual adventures. To support this process, the body also becomes temporarily paralyzed to protects us physically, while the soul travels safely without waking us or causing movement that can injure us. Sometimes, if we wake up before the body fully releases this state, we experience sleep paralysis with strange feelings of being stuck, trapped, floating, or not quite back in the body yet.

Psychic hygiene and energy healing. Sleep is a great time for your body to clear out its energy. Our aura is refreshed, and we release the emotional residue, negative energy, and psychic buildup from the day. This sacred cleansing supports deep healing: not just physically, but also emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.

Subconscious processing and shadow work. Dreams help the subconscious mind process things like daily experiences, emotions, and unresolved patterns. Often, they bring forward parts of our “shadow self,” which is the hidden or repressed aspects of who we are. By using our imagination to see and understand these parts of ourselves, we grow spiritually.

The Law of Attraction and manifestation. Sleep is one of the most overlooked power tools for manifestation. When you’re at rest, your subconscious mind is especially open to new ideas. If you want to create something, you need to set clear intentions before sleep. You can do this by visualizing your desires or affirming your goals. This will align your energy with what you wish to create. It’s a time when old beliefs can change and new realities begin to form.

The Importance Of Dream Journaling

Dreams are one of the main ways our soul connects with inner guidance and deeper truths. Dreams offer insights into life’s challenges, glimpses of the future, or karmic lessons tied to our soul purpose. This nightly reconnection is like soul nourishment. It recharges the mind, body, and spirit, and often brings a sense of purpose and clarity upon waking. It’s no wonder we often say, “sleep on it” when we have to make a big decision!

People often also say, “I don’t dream.” But the truth is, everyone dreams. The real issue is remembering our dreams. Keeping a dream journal, setting an intention before sleep, and staying still for a few moments when you wake up can help you recall your dreams more clearly. These dream messages can be powerful tools for guidance and even manifestation.

To really tap into this, you need to prepare yourself. Restful, healing sleep is the foundation. Below are some tried-and-true tips I use myself, and often share with clients, to help create the conditions for deep sleep and meaningful dreams.

Natural Sleep Remedies & Enhancers

A number of natural and holistic supplements can be used to improve sleep:

Magnesium: Relaxes the body and calm the mind. It also supports melatonin, the hormone that helps us sleep. You can get more magnesium by eating leafy greens, nuts, and seeds—or by taking a supplement before bed.

Lavender: A soothing scent that can ease anxiety and help you fall asleep more peacefully. You can use it in a diffuser, spray it on your pillow, or dab a little (diluted with oil) on your temples or wrists.

Chamomile: This gentle herb has been used for centuries to help people relax. A warm cup of chamomile tea before bed can calm the mind, ease tension, and help you drift off more easily.

Valerian Root: A natural sleep aid that helps quiet the nervous system. It’s often used to ease restlessness and anxiety. You can take it as a tea, capsule, or tincture.

Tart Cherry Juice: These cherries contain tryptophan, which helps your body make melatonin. Drinking tart cherry juice in the evening may help you fall asleep faster and sleep more deeply.

Ashwagandha: This powerful herb helps your body cope with stress. It lowers cortisol (a stress hormone), which can help calm a racing mind and make it easier to fall asleep.

Passionflower: Known for its calming effects. It can quiet mental chatter and help you relax, especially if you struggle with light sleep or mild insomnia.

Melatonin: A natural hormone your body makes to help regulate your sleep cycle. Taking a small supplement can be helpful if your sleep is off due to jet lag, shift work, or low natural levels.

L-Theanine: Found in tea leaves, L-theanine helps you relax without making you feel sleepy. It can reduce stress and help you stay asleep more peacefully through the night. It’s found in green and black tea or taken as a supplement.

Natural Rhythms: Honor your natural circadian rhythms. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time each day. Your body and soul love routine. Sleep is part of your spiritual practice too.

Spiritual Ways To Support Better Sleep

Many spiritual traditions offer simple practices to help you sleep better. These practices calm your energy, clear your mind, and make your space feel safe and sacred.

Bedtime Prayer: Saying a prayer at bedtime may seem old-school, but it works. For generations, believers have turned to it as a way to end the day with peace and clarity. Before bed, take a quiet moment to pray after a long day. Speak from the heart. Ask for help in letting go of anything heavy, whether it’s stress, worry, or leftover energy from the day. Prayer is a powerful way to clear your mind, calm your spirit, and reconnect with what matters most. Let your words become a bridge to heavenly rest.

Meditation & Breathing: Mind-body techniques like meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindful breathing can help quiet a racing mind and reduce stress, preparing your body for sleep.

Chakra Balancing: Chakras are energy centers in your body. If they’re out of balance, especially your third eye or crown chakra, it can affect your sleep. Gentle meditations, calming crystals like amethyst, or healing sounds can help bring your energy back into balance and support peaceful rest.

Sacred Space: Your bedroom should feel like a sanctuary. Keep it dark, quiet, and free from phones or screens. Clear out heavy or negative energy by smudging with sage or palo santo. Place calming crystals like tourmaline or obsidian near your bed, or amethyst or lepidolite under your pillow. You can also use sacred symbols to create a peaceful, healing vibe. Make your bedroom a place of sacred rest.

Lucid Dreaming & Astral Practices: If you often have restless sleep or bad dreams, you can try practices that help you become aware while dreaming. Learning to be more conscious in your dreams can help you face fears and feel more in control of your sleep experience.

Cord-Cutting: Sometimes we stay energetically connected to people, situations, or thoughts that drain us. Before bed, try a simple visualization. Imagine cutting these cords with a light sword or golden scissors. This can help you feel lighter, calmer, and more free.

Dream Journaling: Keep a notebook next to your bed. When you wake up, write down your dreams, even little pieces. Looking at these dreams over time can help you understand your inner world better and ease any worries or emotional tension they might bring up.

Astral Guides & Spirit Guardians: Some spiritual paths honor spirit guardians or astral guides who protect and guide us while we sleep. You can say a short prayer, light a candle, or simply ask for support from these benevolent spirit helpers to bring peace and safety to your rest.

Crystal Grid: A crystal grid is a way of placing stones with intention. Use calming crystals like amethyst, howlite, or selenite. Place them in a small pattern under your bed or near your pillow to fill your space with peaceful energy.

Shamanic Journey: A shamanic journey is a meditative practice using steady drumming or sound to guide you into a dream-like state. These guided journeys can help release fear, call back lost energy, or invite in a spirit animal to protect you while you sleep.

Herbal & Moon Magic: Combine calming herbs with the energy of the moon. Try making a little sleep pouch filled with lavender or mugwort, and leave it out under the full moon to charge. Tuck it under your pillow to bring the moon’s calming energy into your dreams.

Aura Cleansing: Your aura is your energy field. If it feels heavy or “off,” you might sleep poorly. Before bed, imagine brushing off the day like dust, or picture yourself glowing with white or golden light. This can help you feel lighter, safer, and more relaxed.

Sleep isn’t just physical. It’s sacred. True rest raises your vibration, strengthens your aura, and lights the path ahead. Getting enough sleep isn’t a luxury. It’s a spiritual need. If you have been feeling tired, anxious, or stuck, look at your sleep. It might be the missing piece that could change your life.
