Invoking The Power And Beauty Of Freya

The goddess Freya has a special place in my spiritual self-care routine. I often turn to her when I need extra guidance and support.

Freya is the ancient Norse goddess of love, beauty, fertility, and war. She is one of the most important deities in Norse mythology, embodying the ultimate ancient archetype for ‘girl power’ and ‘boss lady’ energy.

She is traditionally revered for her deep wisdom, boundless compassion, and fierce protection. Invoking her divine feminine power has brought much transformative and empowering energy to many aspects of my life.

In Norse folklore, Freya rides a chariot drawn by two large, powerful cats and is often depicted wearing the Brísingamen necklace, a symbol of her power and beauty.

The Brísingamen was created by four dwarves known for their exceptional craftsmanship. The necklace symbolizes beauty, desire and the power of attraction. It also represents Freyja’s connection to the earth and its fertility.

Freya is the leader of the Valkyries, the warrior maidens who choose those who may die and those who may live in battle. Freyja is said to receive half of the slain warriors in her heavenly field, Fólkvangr, while the other half go to Odin’s hall, Valhalla.

This dual role highlights her authority and revered status among the gods, bridging the realms of life and death. The Valkyries, under her guidance, serve not only as fierce selectors of the fallen but also as protectors and guides for these chosen souls, ensuring their honored place in the afterlife.

Freyja’s leadership of the Valkyries underscores her powerful influence and multifaceted nature within the Norse pantheon. Her connection to both the gentle aspects of life and birth and the intense energies of war and death makes her a multifaceted goddess capable of offering many forms of support in one’s everyday spiritual practice.

When I seek Freya’s support and guidance, I prepare myself with a ritual that honors her presence and calls upon her energy.

CREATING SACRED SPACE

I begin by creating a sacred space with a small altar dedicated to Freya. This space can include images or statues of her, as well as items associated with her energy, such as flowers, feathers, and symbols of love and beauty. Some must-have items I like to use on my altar include:

Fehu Rune: I like to add the Fehu rune to my altar because it is traditionally associated with Freya and symbolizes wealth, abundance, and prosperity. This rune helps set the intention to call upon Freya’s energy to bring abundance and success into my life.

Pink or Golden Candle: I light a candle to represent Freya’s presence. A golden or pink candle works well, symbolizing her beauty and warmth.

Crystals and Gemstones: To connect with Freya as a source of creative inspiration, I like to place some lapis lazuli on my altar because it is a powerful stone for nurturing creativity, enhancing artistic expression, and supporting spiritual growth, making it a popular choice for artists, writers, musicians, and anyone involved in creative endeavors. However, it is not typically associated with the goddess Freya. Crystals and stones more commonly associated with Freya are those that resonate with her qualities of love, beauty, empowerment, and prosperity, such as moonstone, rose quartz, citrine, ruby, and amber. As always, trust your intuition when choosing crystals or stones to invoke specific energies or deities in your spiritual practice.

SETTING INTENTION

Once my Freya altar is ready, I set a clear intention for the guidance or support I need from my favorite goddess. Freya’s energy can be helpful in several areas of life, including:

Emotional Healing: Freya’s compassionate nature supports emotional healing. She helps to release past traumas, promote self-love, and cultivate inner peace.

Empowerment and Confidence: Freya’s warrior aspect can help build confidence and empower individuals to take bold action. She encourages us to stand in our truth and pursue our passions with courage.

Fertility and Creativity: As the goddess of fertility, Freya supports both physical fertility and creative endeavors. She inspires new ideas, projects and artistic expression.

Abundance and Prosperity: With the energy of the Fehu rune, Freya can help attract wealth and abundance. She helps us recognize and accept opportunities for prosperity.

Love and Relationships: Freya is the goddess of love and can help heal and strengthen romantic relationships. She brings compassion, understanding, and a deeper sense of connection between partners.

Hollywood actors can scream “Valhalla” all they want, before charging into battle, but in reality, if someone is brave and handsome, they would probably end up in Freya’s hall! ~ Skjalden

VISUALIZED MEDITATION

When I am ready, I sit quietly in a relaxed position and begin to meditate. I begin by clearing my mind and focusing on my breath, allowing each inhale and exhale to bring a sense of calm and centeredness. I let go of any distracting thoughts and gently bring my focus back to my breath whenever my mind begins to wander.

Then I begin to visualize Freyja’s presence. I imagine her standing in front of me, radiating a warm and loving energy. To visualize Freyja, I imagine a strikingly beautiful, ethereal woman with long, flowing hair cascading down her back, adorned with a crown of flowers or a striking headpiece. Her eyes are bright and captivating, filled with wisdom, courage, and compassion.

Freyja’s clothing is both elegant and practical. I like to imagine her wearing a flowing gown that shimmers with red, gold and other rich colors, signifying her divine status. She also wears a radiant Brísingamen necklace with dazzling interwoven gold and warm gemstones like citrine, ruby and amber that shimmer with divine light. The design is elaborate, showing exquisite craftsmanship, and it glows with a warm, enchanting brilliance that reveals its magical and divine origins.

As I connect with Freya’s presence, I feel a deep sense of peace and strength enveloping me. I feel her presence exuding a sense of grace, strength and ethereal beauty, embodying her role as the Goddess of Love, Beauty and Fecundity.

INVOCATION PRAYER

The next step is to say my favorite invocation:

Freyja, divine goddess of love, beauty, and strength, I call upon your timeless wisdom and grace. Guide me with your boundless compassion, empower me with your fearless courage, and bless me with creative abundance. Surround me with your luminous presence and be with me now and always.

After the invocation, I spend time in silent contemplation, opening my heart and mind to receive Freyja’s guidance. I remain still and attentive, trusting that her wisdom will come through in subtle ways. This is a time to listen deeply, to feel her messages in the form of feelings, thoughts or visions. I trust that her presence is with me, offering the support and insight I seek.

MY JOURNEY WITH FREYA

My spiritual journey with Freya began at a time in my life when I was feeling particularly lost and unsure of my path and purpose. I was struggling with self-doubt in my artistic career and felt a lack of creative inspiration. A friend and fellow rune reader recommended that I start working with the goddess Freya. So I looked into it and soon decided to ask for her guidance.

During meditation, I visualized her presence and felt a warm, comforting energy surrounding me. I heard her whisper, “Trust in your inner beauty and strength. You are capable of great things. This message filled me with a new sense of confidence and clarity.

After this experience, I began to embrace my creativity more fully. I dedicated time each day to my art, allowing Freya’s energy to guide my process. Slowly, opportunities began to present themselves and I felt more in alignment with my true purpose.

As a powerful deity, Freyja’s divine influence is a catalyst for creativity and artistic expression. Her association with magic and the supernatural enhances her role as a muse and inspirer of artistic endeavors.

She has also been instrumental in my growth as a professional rune reader. In Norse mythology, Freyja is revered as a teacher and practitioner of seiðr (also spelled seidhr, seid or seidr), a form of Norse shamanic sorcery. Seiðr is associated with divination, prophecy, healing, and influencing fate or destiny. Her mastery of seiðr enabled her, for example, to foresee the gods’ fate during Ragnarok, the prophesied end of the world in Norse mythology.

By inviting Freya’s magical energy into my life, I was able to overcome my artistic doubts and fears and tap into a deeper source of inspiration and strength. Her guidance helped me overcome challenges and embrace both my artistic journey and psychic work with renewed confidence and vigor. She has become a prominent figure in my metaphysical practice.
