While our sensitivity is a blessing and a gift to the world, it can also become a curse through overwhelming experiences of empathic overload and energy depletion.

Energetic self-care is therefore of paramount importance to the sensitive person. Every empath or HSP should adopt a daily routine of energetic self-care practices designed to cleanse, protect and rejuvenate their aura or personal energy field.

Mastering these practices is not only beneficial to our health and well-being, it’s essential for maintaining holistic balance, protecting our mental health in particular, and nurturing our deep connection to the world and those around us.

As empaths and HSPs, we can manage our energy more effectively by employing several strategies that help us maintain our energetic well-being, while navigating a world that can often feel overwhelming. SELECTIVE SOCIALIZING

Empaths must be selective about the people they spend time with. Surround yourself with positive people who respect your sensibilities and replenish your energy rather than drain it. It’s okay to limit time with people who have the opposite effect. Talking to a therapist or joining a support group for empaths and HSPs can further provide validation, understanding, and additional coping strategies.

Regular periods of solitude are also crucial for empaths and HSPs to recharge and process their experiences. Use this time for activities that rejuvenate you, such as reading, journaling, or practicing a hobby.

SOCIAL BOUNDARIES

Learn to say no to social situations that you know will drain your energy. Setting clear boundaries with others about your needs and limits can help prevent exhaustion. It’s important to communicate these boundaries gently but firmly.

EAT HEALTHY

Eating a balanced, whole-food diet and staying hydrated can have a significant impact on your energy level and resilience. Foods rich in minerals and vitamins support your nervous system, hormonal balance, and brain chemistry.

ADEQUATE HYDRATION

While healthy eating is generally understood by empowered empaths and sensitives, I find that the importance of hydration is often not. To support energetic well-being, it’s not only important to eat well, but also to drink enough water throughout the day. The amount needed can vary based on factors such as activity level, climate, and individual needs, but a general guideline is to drink at least eight glasses of water per day.

We are all energy, and water is an energy conductor. When we are dehydrated, even slightly, our mood and bodily functions are already in a sluggish and depressed state, making it easier for others to drain our energy or for negative energy to attach itself to us or leave an energy imprint. But when we are well hydrated, our minds and bodies function optimally and energy flows in a positive and healthy way on a cellular level that expands outward. Also, cleansing our system with pure, clean, healthy drinking water is key to keeping our energy in a healthy vibration.

If you don’t like the taste of water, you can spice it up with fresh fruit or herbs. Simply add flavors that you enjoy and allow them to infuse your water throughout the day. You can also add a favorite herbal tea bag and allow it to steep in room temperature or cold water for a hint of flavor.

DIGITAL DETOX

Taking regular breaks from electronic devices such as smartphones, computers and televisions can significantly benefit the empath’s energetic health. By reducing exposure to the constant flow of information and electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs), empaths and HSPs experience a restoration of their natural energetic balance.

Stepping away from digital devices not only reduces exposure to the vast array of emotions and energies transmitted through social media, news, and online interactions, but also reduces EMF exposure, thereby reducing related symptoms such as fatigue, anxiety, and brain fog, thus contributing to a clearer and more balanced energetic state.

Without the constant distraction of digital devices, empaths can more easily become present in the moment and their own inner state. SUBSTANCE ABUSE

Uninformed empaths and sensitives tend to self-medicate with stimulants and depressants, which can pose significant dangers to their well-being given their heightened sensitivity. Stimulants such as caffeine and sugar can increase sensitivity and make it harder to cope with stress. Limiting or avoiding these can help keep your energy levels more stable.

Empaths and HSPs also tend to have a heightened sensitivity to the effects of drugs and alcohol. This means that they may experience stronger or more adverse reactions to stimulants and depressants than others, even at lower doses. The increased effects can lead to unexpected side effects, including increased anxiety, mood swings, and physical health problems.

While stimulants and depressants may temporarily relieve symptoms of stress, anxiety, or depression, they may make these conditions worse in the long term. Stimulants can increase anxiety and disrupt sleep patterns, while depressants can worsen depressive symptoms and impair cognitive function.

Relying on substances to manage emotional and sensory overload can lead to a cycle of dependence and, ultimately, addiction. This risk is particularly concerning for empaths and HSPs, who may feel overwhelmed more often and thus be tempted to use these substances more often as a coping mechanism.

ENERGY GROUNDING

Energy grounding, also known as “earthing,” is an energetic practice designed to reconnect with the earth’s natural electrical charge. It helps to stabilize one’s energy field by discharging excess external energies and rebalancing the physical, emotional, and spiritual states. This practice is especially beneficial for empaths and highly sensitive people who absorb energy from their surroundings more intensely and often feel energetically overloaded or unbalanced as a result.

Grounding is best accomplished through physical contact with the earth by walking barefoot on natural surfaces such as grass, dirt, or sand, which allows for direct contact with the earth. Grounding can however also be practiced through meditative visualization techniques, such as visualizing roots extending from your body into the earth.

ENERGY PROTECTION

Next to grounding, energy shielding is the most important energetic practice for empaths and HSPs. Visualize an energy shield around you, such as a bubble of light or a circle of angels, that protects you from negative energies. This mental imagery creates an energetic barrier or shield against energy drain.

Another proactive habit to avoid energy dips and drains is to simply send your angels in front of you during the day. Each morning, or whenever you think of it, mentally or aloud, ask your angels to go before you during the day to ensure that everything that happens is for your highest good. You can be as creative as you like with this exercise. You can ask for grace and ease during a potentially stressful conversation or interaction you have planned. You can also ask for clear traffic or unexpected joyful surprises. Get creative and have fun!

ENERGY CLEARING & CLEANSING

Clearing, cleansing and balancing your energy field on a regular basis is critical for empaths and highly sensitive individuals. Think of your aura as an energetic air purifier that is constantly filtering the atmosphere. If you don’t clean your filter on a regular basis, you get clogged up and don’t function as well.

Some effective energy purifying techniques to help you protect your aura and maintain balance include:

Salt Cleansing: Bathing with sea salt or Epsom salt can help cleanse the aura and absorb negative energies. The minerals in salt also promote physical relaxation and stress reduction. It’s relaxing and helps draw out negative energy. Try a blend of sea salt, blue clay, and eucalyptus oil for a gentle detoxification on both a physical and spiritual level.

Smoke Cleansing: Anoint yourself with sage or frankincense. Use bundles of white sage, rosemary, cedar, or lavender to create a cleansing smoke bath. Always make sure the herbs you use are ethically sourced!

Visualization: Visualize negative energy leaving your body and being replaced with positive energy. Imagine a protective shield around you that filters out unwanted energies.

Meditation: Regular meditation and mindfulness practices can help empaths and HSPs center themselves and maintain a clear energy field. Breathwork and guided visualizations can be especially beneficial. Focus on grounding, releasing, and replenishing your energy during meditation.

Affirmations: Using positive affirmations to reinforce one’s energy protection and personal boundaries can be powerful. Regularly affirming your right to clear, balanced, and protected energy helps to strengthen these intentions.

Prayer: Prayer strengthens the empath’s connection with the divine or their higher power. Various religious traditions invoke prayer for protection. For empaths, this can mean asking for a shield against absorbing too much from others or the environment. Prayer can also be a source of healing energy, both for the empath and the planet. Many traditions believe in the power of prayer to heal and transform. For empaths, praying for healing can help clear negative energies and restore emotional and energetic balance.

Crystal Work: Certain crystals have protective and cleansing qualities. For example, black tourmaline and amethyst can protect against negative energy, while selenite can cleanse and clear the aura.

Rituals: Practices from various mystical and occult traditions can be used for powerful energy cleansing and protection, including ritual baths, candle magic, moon rituals, smudging ceremonies, chanting and mantras, crafting amulets or talismans, sigil magic, and banishing rituals. When engaging in mystical or occult rituals, it is important to trust your intuition and ensure that the practices are in line with your personal beliefs and comfort level. Beginning with simpler rituals and gradually exploring more complex practices can help you find the most effective methods for your energy cleansing needs.

Aromatherapy: Use essential oils such as lavender, sage, or eucalyptus to cleanse your energy field. Diffuse these oils or apply them to your pulse points. Take a spiritual bath with herbs, flowers, or essential oils. Set an intention to cleanse and rejuvenate your energy during the bath.

Sound Therapy:  Healing sound vibrations, such as the sounds of Tibetan singing bowls or crystal bowls, can release stagnant energy and promote balance.

Sacred Space: Empaths and HSPs benefit from creating a calming and energizing environment. This can include physically cleaning the space as well as using methods such as sage smudging, feng shui, or crystal grids to clear negative energy.

Nature Therapy: Spending time in nature and with animals can be incredibly healing and rejuvenating for empaths and HSPs. Nature naturally clears and refreshes energy, helping to restore balance.

Using some or all of these cleansing strategies will empower you as an empath or HSP and prevent those dips and dives in your mood and energy from becoming fewer and farther between!

By the way, energy self-care practices are not just for empaths, but for all spiritually aware people. Regular energy cleansing helps you stay aligned, grounded, and connected.

CORD CUTTING

Reclaim your energy by eliminating the energy cord connections between you and another person that may be draining your energy or causing emotional discomfort. Energetic cords allow energy to be transferred from one person to another, which can be positive or negative. You can intentionally cut these cords through visualization, meditation, affirmations, or rituals.

I prefer to do cord-cutting by calling upon Archangels Michael and Raphael to help me cut toxic connections and clear my energy field. It does not have to be a lengthy process. I simply think or speak out loud:

Archangels Michael and Raphael, please be with me right now. Thank you for cutting all the strings and clearing my energy, sending it all to the Light for transmutation and the highest good of all involved.

I also make an accompanying cutting and sweeping gesture around my body to reinforce my intention.

Creating a habit of preemptively cutting cords and clearing your energy field will help make your daily life and social interactions smoother and prevent energy dips before they occur. I recommend choosing a specific time or times of the day to do this. You can also choose a specific activity to tie the habit to, such as taking a shower, brushing your teeth, washing your hands, or stopping at a red light. Anything you do frequently throughout the day that helps you remember to keep your energy high and pure.
