Why Do Empaths And Sensitives Often Feel Drained?

Or maybe you’ve walked out of a store or other public place and noticed that you were short with your loved ones and irritable? Or you come home in the evening feeling sad or depressed for no apparent reason, after starting the day feeling cheerful and happy?

If this happens to you often, it is very likely that you are an empath or a highly sensitive person.

Empaths and highly sensitive people (HSPs) often feel drained by other people, social gatherings, crowds and certain environments due to several key aspects of their inherent nature and the way they interact with the world around them. Here are the major reasons for this phenomenon:

Genetic predisposition: Research suggests that the trait of high sensitivity is influenced by genetic factors that affect how individuals process sensory information and emotional stimuli. A key aspect of this genetic influence is the way the brain processes serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate mood, appetite, sleep, and sensory perception. Variations in genes related to the serotonin transporter have been linked to differences in emotional reactivity and sensitivity to the environment. Studies have shown that individuals with certain variations of these genes may exhibit traits consistent with high sensitivity, such as deeper cognitive processing of sensory information, higher emotional reactivity, and increased empathy.

Highly sensitive people (empaths) suffer more but they also love harder, dream wider, and experience deeper horizons and bliss. When you’re sensitive, you’re alive in every sense of the word in this wildly beautiful world ~ Victoria Erickson

Deep processing: Empaths and HSPs process emotional stimuli more deeply than others. They are highly attuned to the emotions and energies of the people around them, often feeling those emotions as if they were their own. This deep emotional processing can be overwhelming and exhausting, especially in environments where emotional stimuli are intense or abundant, such as crowds or social gatherings.

Sensory overload: Highly sensitive people have a heightened sensitivity to sensory input. Loud noises, bright lights, and strong smells can be overwhelming for HSPs. Crowded and chaotic environments where sensory stimuli are abundant and intense can lead to sensory overload, making such environments particularly draining for HSPs.

High compassion: Empaths and HSPs typically have high levels of empathy, kindness and compassion, which drive them to connect with, help and heal others. While these traits are wonderful gifts to the world, they can also lead to emotional exhaustion, especially if the empath or HSP feels unable to help or if they overextend themselves in their desire to help others.

Emotional resonance: Empaths and sensitives have highly active mirror neurons, the part of the brain responsible for empathy and the ability to tune into the emotional states of others. This heightened neurological activity causes empaths to resonate more deeply with the emotions and energies of others, experiencing them as their own.

Empathic overarousal: Empaths have a natural ability to tune into the mental, emotional and physical states of others. In social settings or crowds, empaths may inadvertently absorb the stress, anxiety, and emotions of those around them. This empathic overarousal can lead to feelings of being overwhelmed and energetically drained as they struggle to differentiate between their own emotions and those of others.

Compassion fatigue: Empaths often feel a strong urge to help or heal others, a desire that can be amplified by their own experiences of pain and healing from trauma. However, continuously taking on the emotional burdens of others without adequate self-care can lead to compassion or empathy fatigue, where the empath becomes emotionally and physically drained.

Lack of boundaries: Empaths and HSPs may have difficulty setting boundaries, both emotionally and physically. Without effective boundaries, they may find themselves overexposed to draining situations and people, making it harder for them to protect their energy and well-being.

I understand now that I’m not a mess but a deeply feeling person in a messy world. I explain that now, when someone asks me why I cry so often, “For the same reason I laugh so often – because I’m paying attention ~ Glennon Doyle Melton

Need for downtime: Both empaths and HSPs need more downtime to rest and recharge than others. The constant bombardment of stimuli and emotional energies from others can quickly deplete their energy reserves, requiring periods of solitude and quiet to recover.

Trauma wounds: Traumatic experiences can deeply affect the empath’s or HSP’s energetic resilience, affecting their mental, emotional, and sometimes physical health. In addition to the empath’s inherent sensitivities, traumatic experiences in both childhood and adulthood can lead to a heightened state of alertness to emotional changes in others (often as a form of protection or coping mechanism), further depleting the empath’s energy reserves.

Spiritual empathy: Beyond emotional empathy, spiritual empathy involves sensing and taking on the spiritual or energetic burdens of others. This can be particularly draining if the empath does not know how to effectively release or transmute these energies

Energy transfer: All human interactions involve some form of energy exchange. Empaths and HSPs, being more open and sensitive to the energies of others, often absorb negative or toxic energies from those around them, while others steal their healing energy, leading to feelings of being energetically drained.

Unshielded aura: Empaths and HSPs often have more open or unshielded auras or energy fields, making them more susceptible to being affected by the energies of others. Without proper grounding, cleansing and shielding techniques, they can be overwhelmed by external energies.

Karmic connections: Soul contract connections with others, especially those that result in significant energy drain, are sometimes rooted in karmic or past-life connections. These unresolved energies or soul lessons from past lives may be manifesting in the present, requiring resolution or healing.

Energetic cords: Energetic cords are invisible connections that form between individuals during interactions that are especially strong in emotional or close relationships. These cords can become conduits for the transfer of energy, with empaths often on the receiving end of energy drain, especially when the cords are connected to toxic individuals or people experiencing negativity or turmoil.

Empaths have to be careful not to internalize others’ feelings, as this can cause them to feel anxious, sad, or even depressed. It can leave the empath feeling drained or exhausted. They must learn to set boundaries so as not to let toxic people drain them dry ~ Donna G. Bourgeois

Modern technology: With its rapid advancements and widespread presence, digital and communications technology has a broad impact on the energetic health of empaths and sensitives. While it offers incredible benefits and conveniences, its impact on the emotional and energetic well-being of highly sensitive individuals and empaths is profound and multifaceted, including the effects of information overload, electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs), toxic social media, and the decrease in quality of social connections and relationships.

Planetary shift: Empaths and sensitives are acutely attuned to the global spiritual awakening, planetary energy shift and earth changes that have been occurring for several decades, but have become particularly evident since the 1990s. Widespread energy upgrades and accompanying emotional turmoil continue to affect us, and this sensitivity is reflected not only in our reactions to immediate events, but also in our resonance with the broader challenges facing our planet. In the midst of the resulting storm of collective disconnection, negative emotions, and energetic resistance by those who remain unawakened, we are also feeling more deeply the effects of social conflict and natural disasters such as fires, earthquakes, and extreme weather.

With that said, should empaths and HSPs accept there fate and allow such disturbances to drain their energy, affect their mood, and destroy their well-being just because they are more sensitive and attuned?

Absolutely not!

The better we understand and embrace our sensitivity as empaths and HSPs, the more consciously we can implement strategies to manage our energy effectively, such as setting boundaries, practicing healthy living and spiritual self-care, and seeking social interactions and environments that are more conducive to our well-being.
