Raising An Old Soul
We have more people on the planet now than ever before. That means we have more old souls, and more new ones. Many parents are raising old souls and are struggling with how different it is from the information in all of the parenting books and blogs out there.
If your child is an old soul, which is one who has lived many past lives, they probably were your parent at one time. On some level they know and remember this and may challenge your authority, and change in roles. Thus, the power struggle so many parents go through.
I have been working with children for decades and have had many of them tell me their past life stories. I’ve heard, “I used to be a princess” and “I used to have a sister” or “My mom says we’re not having another baby, but I know I have a little brother coming!”
I’ve also had children tell me how they died in another life or how their mom isn’t their “real” mom. One boy told me he remembered being born. He remembered leaving the light and coming through a tunnel. It was a difficult decision to come back to Earth.
Another gifted child I worked with was able to find lost items, when his parents asked him where something was that had been misplaced. Just the faith that they had in him and the unquestioning belief that he could find these items helped him open up an invaluable gift that will serve him and others in life. Old souls also tend to have unusual or extraordinary gifts, talents and interests which should be nurtured for the greater good.
The old soul in a small body, who you are currently raising, was probably at one time, a noble, peasant, politician, teacher, parent, healer, farmer, or even a criminal. They have been rich, they have been poor. They have been student and teacher, mother and child, slave and master, greedy and generous. They have seen righteousness and injustice. They have lived both long and short lives. They have been every race, religion and gender, have spoken many languages, and lived in many diverse cultures, societies and civilizations.
It’s a tough time to raise, teach or be a highly gifted child. Schools are to extraordinary children what zoos are to cheetahs ~ Stephanie Tolan
Old souls may have saved lives and taken lives. They have been through much trauma and tenderness to get them to where they are today. They may have built the pyramids, or ruled great lands. Many old souls have a fearless spirit, yet also may have some phobias. They may have had many traumatic deaths that can create a fear with small, enclosed spaces, heights, a fear of drowning and even loud noises, like fireworks.
All of those experiences, all of that wisdom and, yes, some guilt and regret, as well as fears and trauma, are embedded within of that tiny person.
Your child has wisdom that can bring you to tears and drop you to your knees, if you stop lecturing and talking and rushing from place to place. Just ask the simple questions. Who were you? What is your first memory? Do you remember being in mommy’s tummy? What was that like? Do you remember why you picked us as parents? What was your main purpose for coming into this life? Amazing things can happen when we stop texting, and emailing, and turn off the computer, and ask our child’s old soul: “Who are you?”
I know of children who can predict disease and accidents, but no one listens.
Allowing a child to whine and complain, and become insatiable, sets them up for not only being unlikeable, but also for a life of pessimism and depression. Always focusing on what we don’t like, what’s wrong, and what we don’t have, instead of an attitude of gratitude, and being fulfilled in a life of peace, love and simplicity, makes children depressed and angry. It is important that children feel blessed and not victimized.
There is a wonderful saying: ”Better than, worse than, but never equal too.” This is how most people feel. They are better than or worse than others. The concept of competition and comparing to others will always set children up for failure and insecurity, or narcissism and arrogance. Let them know that all people are loved equally by Source and that they are connected to All.
As much as the world has benefited from the contributions of gifted individuals, it is disturbing to realize that the population least likely to learn and achieve its potential is the highly gifted ~ Joseph Cardillo
Your old soul child has wisdom and information that can heal you, teach you and open the doors to a more balanced relationship. Because they are so close to the Heavens and have more memory of life on the Other Side, they have access to healing powers. Helping your old soul youngster tap into this energy, and reading them books about healing, will help them stay connected to their higher selves. Remind them of the power of words, love and thought.
If children are taught that even the smallest bug was put on this planet by the same Source that put them here, that Mother Earth is its creation, that all animals are to be revered and have God in them, they will stay connected to their own soul and Source.
Encouraging your child to communicate with their higher self and spirit guides, and to trust their own intuition, will help them through even the most difficult challenges. It will empower them to act with dignity and grace throughout their life.
The best way I have found, as a Kundalini Yoga instructor, to have happy, healthy and holy children is to teach them to meditate and pray. I let them have their own private and powerful connection to the spiritual realm, with no observers or judgment. This magical connection will go with them through the ups and downs of their entire life.
