Journey To The Isle Of Avalon
The Isle of Avalon is a mythical place of healing, psychic learning, crafting, and the life and times of King Arthur. Figures such as Morgan Le Fay, King Arthur and Merlin the Magician are just a few legendary names associated with this Holy Isle. Though no longer here in the physical world, Avalon is still accessible through the inner worlds by way of meditation or immrama, an Irish-Welsh word meaning ‘spiritual journey on the astral plane.’
Avalon was known as training ground for priestesses who dedicated their life to spirituality, and to the Great Mother Goddess. These women trained in the arts of clairvoyance, herbalism, weaving and devotion to the Divine feminine.
Avalon will always be there for all men to find if they can seek the way thither, throughout all the ages past the ages. If they cannot find the way to Avalon, it is a sign, perhaps, that they are not ready ~ Marion Zimmer Bradley
However, men were also very much a part of the history of Avalon. Merlin, the Magician, is closely connected with the magic of Avalon and for training the young Arthur to become king. It is said that King Arthur was taken to the Isle of Avalon by his half-sister, Morgan Le Fay, for healing, after being injured at war. It is also believed that King Arthur was taken in a barge to Avalon at his time of death, but then later buried in Glastonbury.
There are also many love stories associated with Avalon, including King Arthur, Guinevere, Morgan Le Fay, Merlin, and Numue (Lady of the Lake), and others. Many people feel a strong association with Avalon and its history. Do you maybe recall a time when you may have been on the Island of Avalon?
Here’s a guided journey for you to visit this very special place. Get into a comfortable position where you will not be disturbed and take three deep breaths before you begin.
Find yourself standing on the shore. It is dusk and you feel a cool breeze blow gently through your hair. Next to you there is an apple tree with a branch swaying. It is bedecked with nine silver bells. You feel inextricably pulled to shake the branch. You shake the branch nine times and you begin to see what looks like a boat, a barge, coming toward you from the mists.
There are three hooded figures waiting for you on board when it arrives. You step into the barge and the waves gently take you back out to sea. You feel, rather than see, your way through the mists. As the boat glides through the fog you eventually feel it scrape onto the marshy shore. You have reached the Holy Isle of Avalon.
An older woman rushes down to the barge to greet you. She holds your hands as you step out on the shore and tells you she is your guide. You look into her eyes and there is an instant connection and ancient familiarity. She walks you over to a roundhouse, where you enter to see others sitting by the hearthside. You sit down and listen to an instructor who is sharing sacred knowledge and information. It is just what you are interested in learning more about. Your ears perk up as you listen closely.
And so, perhaps, the truth winds somewhere between the road to Glastonbury, Isle of the Priests, and the road to Avalon, lost forever in the mists of the Summer Sea ~ Marion Zimmer Bradley
As you sit there you feel as though you’re with family and among your own tribe. Looking around the room you notice crystal balls, wheels and looms with thread on them and a black cat sitting in the corner. There is a broom next to the doorway where the cat sits. You walk over to pet her and as you run your fingers through her fur you feel all of your powers awakening within you. You feel your chakras opening and psychic centers activated.
You step outside to get a breath of fresh air and see a grassy area that leads down to a lake. You walk slowly down the hill toward the water where there is a bench to sit on. As you sit down, you look at the colorful flowers that surround you and feel a deep sense of peace.
There is a bridge off to your left where you see a man with long, white hair and beard, wearing a long, dark blue cloak. He is walking someone across bridge.
A noise catches your attention and you look over to the right to see a unicorn drinking water from the lake. He lifts his head to look at you and stares straight into your eyes. As you look into his smoky gray eyes, he begins to communicate with you telepathically. He conveys that this is the lake of the Lady of the Lake and it is where the Excalibur, or Sword of Truth, resides. The Unicorn tells you his name is Destiny, and if you wish to know the Truth about anything, all you need to do is drink from these waters.
You walk down to the edge of the lake, cup your hands together, and drink some of the fresh water. It tastes cool and clean, and you feel your throat chakra clear as you swallow the icy blue waters. All of the lies you’ve ever heard or taken in are now released, and all of the lies you’ve ever told are now gone. All that remains is a clear knowing of the truth.
After some time has passed, you have assimilated new information and are ready to make your way back up the grassy hill to the roundhouse. There are women gathered on the lawn dancing in a circle. The sun is setting and the Full Moon is rising. As you approach them they welcome you by creating an opening in the circle to hold your hands, as you dance round-and-round while looking up at the light of the Moon.
Waters, where the stars shone like bonfires at night and the green of day was always the green of spring. Youth, love, beauty – I knew them in Avalon. Proud steeds, bright metal, soft lips, dark ale. Honor… ~ Roger Zelazny
As the circle begins to slow down, the dance comes to a close. The women bow forward to each other, offering a gesture or symbol of gratitude. Your guide that greeted you when you arrived is standing behind you and tells you it is nearing your time of departure. She escorts you back to the barge where the hooded figures stands inside waiting for you to board. You wave goodbye to your guide and know that you will be back here again soon.
Stepping into the barge, you make your way to the prow. The boat leaves the shore and it is only by the light of the Full Moon that illuminates the waters. You enter the mists once again and use your senses to guide your way back to the mainland.
You spot the shore and feel the boat scrape gently onto the sand as you arrive. One of the guides in the barge pulls back his hood and you see his long white hair and beard. He looks at you with twinkling eyes and a smile. You recognize him and know that you have now reconnected with your master teacher and spirit guide. As you silently look into each other’s eyes, your heart fills with joy and you have a clear remembrance of who you are, and the magic that you carry within you.
You are led out of the boat by your guide and back to the apple tree from where you began. He pulls an apple from the tree and hands it to you. He invites you to slice it in half vertically once you get home. Though you don’t understand why now, he tells you it will make sense later. You hug goodbye for now and hop onto the pathway toward home.
Once you arrive home, you take the apple into the kitchen. You get out a cutting knife and slice it in half vertically as you were instructed to do. You see five seeds in each half that form the shape of a star. You hear the sound of women’s voices singing as you look out your kitchen window. The Full Moon is visible and as you look closely, you see a circle of women dancing around the moon and singing. You take a bite of the apple and see a shooting star cross the night’s sky.
It is all beginning to make sense now, as you feel a connection to everything. You finish the apple and make your way bed. As you begin to fall asleep you see Destiny, the unicorn, in your mind’s eye, and realize you have remembered the truth.
Finding yourself back in this time and this place, taking three deep breaths, feeling the weight of your body on the earth, and coming all the way back, it is now time to return.
I hope you enjoyed your visit to Avalon. There is now an ancient knowing inside of you that is alive and ready to be reclaimed. The invitation awaits you. I wish you many blessings on your journey.
