Psychics And Mediums: What’s the Difference?
Many people automatically assume that psychics and mediums are one and the same. The truth is, all mediums are psychic, but not all psychics are mediums.
By definition, a psychic is any person with some form of extrasensory perception (ESP). ESP takes different forms and some psychics are gifted in more than one area. A medium, by contrast, is a very specific kind of psychic, someone who can communicate directly with the spirit realms.
For many reasons, psychics are sometimes viewed more skeptically than mediums by the average person. There is no “proven” way to tell if someone is psychic; everyone has some degree of psychic ability, but some are naturally more gifted than others. Mediums, on the other hand, can often convey specific, accurate or familiar information from a deceased friend or family member to a bereaved survivor.

Because of this, mediums are more often depicted in positive light in pop culture, such as films like Odd Thomas. Psychics, on the other hand, usually wind up being painted as hucksters who want to scam the innocent. That simply isn’t true.
People who truly have a psychic gift of any kind generally wouldn’t want to sell out for a quick buck. As for mediums, history shows us that those who have tried to profit from their gift have actually lost it later, since the spirit world isn’t to be trifled with.
Movies and television often portray one of these “psychics” prompting his or her client with initial questions. Those who truly receive messages from beyond would never need to do this. They would first relay information, and only at times ask for confirmation.
There really is no reason why the two should be confused. A medium is simply a very specific kind of psychic, and a comparatively rare one. Because so little is known about the afterlife, their services are often highly sought. In the aftermath of loss, people want to know about their loved ones’ messages or unfinished business.
Another important distinction is that while psychic readings often focus on predicting future events, mediums primarily tune into past and present issues ~ Rebecca Rosen
On the other hand, a psychic such as a clairvoyant or crystal reader may be able to divine the truth as well. One saying common in many spiritual traditions is “one destination, many paths.” Think of this when comparing, perhaps unfairly, psychics and mediums.
Since we are all born with latent psychic ability, there’s no reason to believe we can’t develop our own gifts. There will always be those who are called “naturals,” but others may have to work harder. Take time to listen and practice each day, and you will start to feel what your ability, or abilities, might be.
Psychics and mediums don’t have to be in a rivalry or antagonizing relationship. The two are, as it were, on the same team! Now you’ll know how to tell the difference.
