The Lucky Penny
My son is an old soul. He is intuitive and deeply spiritual. He communicates with his guides on a daily basis. He tells me he has gut feelings that often come true. He has had prophetic dreams. He ‘reads my mind’ all the time!
I love sharing magical things with him. For example, I taught him the traditional rhyme, “Find a penny, pick it up; all day long you’ll have good luck,” and he has been eagerly looking for pennies ever since. This makes me happy, as it teaches him to be aware of the world around him and to find the magic in everyday life.
By the way, I recently learned that the penny rhyme was originally “See a pin, pick it up, all day the day you’ll have good luck.” Apparently, this was a reference to an old pagan ritual in which a pin could be used as a good luck charm. The belief was that a dropped pin may have been used in such a magic spell and would therefore bring good fortune to the person who found it.
A while ago, I also told my son about an incident when, at the age of 11, my guides told me that they were sending me a gift. The next day, in a cow field, I found a sterling silver children’s ring with a Native American design engraved on it. He has been asking me ever since when he will also get a gift from his guides. He has found some coins on the ground, but they are always upside down (not a good sign).
As a 7-year-old, he is now in the developmental stage known as the “age of reason,” when children become more capable of rational thought and develop a conscience. He is becoming more aware of the difference between right and wrong, the relationship between cause and effect, and is beginning to realize that other people have their own feelings and experiences that may not be the same as his.

Although kids at this age begin to see how their actions might affect other people, they sometimes can still be very focused on themselves.
It is also the age when a child’s morals and values are developing, and they become more aware of what others are doing. This leads my son to sometimes compare what others have and he does not, instead of being grateful for what he has.
We work on this daily.
Recently, while driving in the car, we had a conversation about privilege and gratitude. He was upset about not getting something he wanted. I allowed him to cry and vent. Then I talked about how incredibly fortunate we are. I told him we own a lovely home, we live in a safe, peaceful community, and he has amazing friends.
I also reminded him how fortunate he is to be homeschooled and to have dance, gymnastics, martial arts, guitar and piano lessons almost every day of the week. Most of all, he is healthy and loved.
A short time later, we got out of the car to visit our favorite deli. Right outside my son’s door was a penny facing upright. My son beamed because he knew it was the gift from his guides that he had been waiting for! I told him it reinforced what I had been saying about feeling lucky in life and counting our blessings.

I see people on their cell phones all the time these days, missing the wonders of everyday life. They even walk their dogs while on their cell phones, not noticing the cute things their pet does. They do not pay attention to the glorious sunshine, the wind in their face, or the smile of a stranger. They certainly won’t stop to smell any roses. The beauty of life passes them by while they are staring at one of those toxic devices.
I believe that people who are constantly fixated on the trivialities displayed on their phone screens often walk right over lucky pennies everywhere they go. What magical signs have their guides sent them lately that they completely missed because they were having a petty argument with someone on social media?
If you are guilty of this, know that Spirit wants us to look up and connect with the daily miracles and wonders around us. The eyes of a stranger are after all the windows of their soul. Put the phone down and look around for a change, your guides might just have a message for you.
