How To Ground Your Energy
‘Grounding’ is a common term you are likely to encounter early in your spiritual awakening journey. If you are interested in energy work of any kind, grounding is a key technique to help you stay energetically balanced and enhance your metaphysical practice.
Essentially grounding is a type of meditation that is quick and very intentional. Through grounding we connect our own energy field or light body with the energy of the Earth. This balances our chakras by clearing out those energies that are no longer serve us. Connecting to the Earth’s energy in this way releases negative patterns, thoughts, emotions, and habits, to achieve a clearer, elevated state of consciousness.
To become more grounded, try this visualization exercise. Start by closing your eyes and focusing on your breathing. If you are used to meditation this will be very familiar, if not that is okay! Just be present with your breath and pay attention to your breathing as you inhale and exhale.
Count to three as you draw in your breath, and again as you exhale. Gradually slow the rhythm of your breathing down and just be present with the experience of the air moving in through your nose and into your chest. Feel your physical body around you as you breathe.
I like to focus on my heart chakra while I do this, but it is not necessary. I just find that as I breathe in and out, I like to feel the swell of air in my chest, as if is ‘hugging my heart.’

Once you feel calm and anchored in your breathing, visualize a pranic energy tube running through your body from the very top of your crown, all the way down to your tailbone. ‘Prana’ is a Sanskrit term for the cosmic energy that is the essence of our existence.
Envision your pranic channel flowing through your body, aligned with your spine, and connecting to your higher self, as well as to the energy of Mother Earth. If you are familiar with the chakra system, visualize how this tube of energy intersects each of your chakras.
Once you have formed this visualization, set your intention to connect with the Earth’s energy. Use this intention to extend the bottom of the tube beyond your tailbone, straight down into the very center of the Earth itself. You can also use your breath here. Every time you breathe in, see the tube extending further and further down, deep in the very heart of Mother Earth.
The first few times you do this exercise it may not feel natural. You may feel like nothing is really happening, and that’s okay! Grounding feels different for everyone. The idea is to practice this energy connection, and over time it will come quite naturally.
Once you have grounded your energy flow, you can begin to use this connection to release any toxic energies and negative emotions that are not serving your well-being and highest good. I find it helps to use my breath here too. With each breath out, I visualize and feel any lower vibrations or base energies passing through the grounding tube down into the Earth, so that it can be transmuted.
By the way, this does not mean you are now ‘dumping’ your negative energy in the Earth. Nature has no judgment on whether an energy is ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ It is simply energy. Our personal perceptions give energy the particular charges we experience as good or bad.
Most people are unaware that they are ungrounded, and just carry on trying to survive each day. As a society, we are fast becoming disconnected from ourselves due to technology and being busy ‘doing’ rather than ‘being,’ that we have lost touch ~ Shakti
You can stay in this grounded state for as long as you wish, releasing these energies down through your pranic tube. However, once you have practiced it a several times, you will likely find you can ground in a matter of moments!
To complete the process, I like to visualize with each breath how fresh, clear, nourishing energy is entering my body and replenishing my system.
If you find yourself in a challenging life situation, or having to make a difficult decision, or when you’re feeling fearful about something, use this grounding technique to help you get clarity. It clears out the negative ‘noise’ and establishes a calm baseline from which you can then make a better assessment of your situation.
Grounding is an simple process that becomes easier and easier the more you practice it, and it is a great tool to ensure you are making choices and decisions from a heart-centered and clear headspace.
