Messages From My Totems
Do you have a specific animal, bird, reptile, or insect that keeps catching your attention? I am not speaking of your dog or cat or pet bird, but of those that you repeatedly cross paths with in nature, or even in your dreams.
Each one of us has at least one totem or spirit animal, and sometimes more, that show up in some way throughout our lifetime. The term totem comes from the Ojibwa word ototeman and was introduced in English in the 18th century to refer to a ‘designated guardian spirit animal.’
When our totems show up, the most important thing is to recognize what is currently happening in your life, or what thoughts are going through your mind at the time you see it. You may also notice that whenever you are in turmoil you tend to see this specific creature (or creatures) more than when life is going smoothly.
Each totem is a symbolic representation with a specific message. They warn us of danger, or help us make important life decisions, or comfort us when we are struggling, or just bring a confirmation or a sense of peace.
They bring to us whatever we most need at the time they cross our paths. It is up to you to just trust the energy you are in when you come across one of these beautiful creatures.
Three totems that have been present in my life at specific times are the Eagle, the Owl and the Wolf. Each offered me specific support I needed at that time, and they brought me reassuring messages. At times they have also inspired me with confidence, power and strength when I most needed it. Below are a few examples of what these totems have represented to me. Maybe it will help you identify, understand, and trust your animal totems.
You may find that you feel connected to a power animal, or you could feel close to many members of the animal kingdom. Your animal guides hold a particular quality that could help you navigate life with a bit more ease, faith, and confidence ~ Emma Mildon
Eagle
Eagle helps me to look at things from a new perspective. An eagle can fly higher than any other bird and when other birds annoy them, they simply soar up higher, past the limits of what the other birds can reach.
So, when people or things are distressing me, or I feel like others are ‘ganging up’ on me, Eagle reminds me to distance myself, leave it all behind, and rise above it all.
Eagles also represents power. They can effortlessly carry prey several pounds heavier than themselves over long distances. In times when I feel I have to carry others or have many burdens, Eagle reminds me that I powerful and strong enough.
Owl
Many owl species can turn their heads as much as 270 degrees in either direction. Owl thus reminds me to watch my back when someone is trying to drag me down. Owls are also wisdom carriers, so it always confirms when my own learning and growth is on the right track.
Wolf
Wolves are cunning, stealthy, protective of their young, always aware of their surroundings, and always in control. When I encounter Wolf, I know I am one the right path or have embarked on a meaningful journey. I also know that I am protected and in control; my path will be clear and safe.
Wolf also warns me when change is coming and reassures me that I will have the cunning and knowledge to do the right thing for me. If you are ever confused about a path you seek to take, take time to meditate and ask the wolf which is right for you. You will receive an answer, I always do. But only ask it once. Once Wolf brings the answer, trust that it is the right one.
