Multi-Tasking Does Not Cultivate A Quality Life
I’m sure there has been a time in your life when you may have been too active on a hot summer, day without adequately hydrating, or juggling far too many tasks at once without taking a break. While you may have crossed the finish line, or pleased your boss by checking off all the tasks you completed, your sense of well-being was probably rock bottom, and your nerves frazzled. You possibly also questioned whether or not the best version of yourself showed up for life the next day.
Although many of us have found ways to multi-task our hectic lives, research is increasingly showing that effective multi-tasking is in fact a myth. Working on multiple projects at once doesn’t necessarily make us high achievers, or a successful super humans. Multitasking for most individuals merely replaces quality with quantity, and often leaves us feeling overwhelmed and disconnected from our deeper purpose.
As a spiritualist, I make it a practice not to judge how others achieve their everyday objectives and goals. But I do counsel many people who seem to have traded quantity for quality in their lives, and are missing out on the gift of savoring the sweet taste of personal achievement that is purposely focused and uninterrupted.
While old habits are tough to break, each of us has the innate capacity to build new processes within our mind. Psychological tools, such as Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) for example, can be used to re-program the mind to think differently.
Metaphysics and New Thought spirituality also teaches that through positive thinking we can manifest healthier outcomes in all areas of our lives. Many indigenous peoples also have a long tradition of spiritual practices, such as vision quests, dream interpretation, divination, and rituals and ceremonies, to help seekers find their best path.

But we do not need any particular teaching, technique or tradition to put on the brakes and turn our spiritual vehicles around. We can move towards the change that each of us desires deep down at any moment. Yes, it is that easy to get out of the rat race and the traffic jams, that too often makes us feel stuck without any recourse.
If we simply make a decision to complete an act with purpose, our consciousness will follow, and the action will manifest. This same process applies to letting go of habits that no longer serve our highest good, or our access to grace. When we let go of that which hinders our journey, we clear the path for personal renewal and healthy change to emerge.
If you have been feeling overwhelmed by your tasks and duties, make a list of the top five goals you would like to work on for the month. Next, schedule them into your life in the manner that will allow you to bring your best self to your project – and not the tired, worn-down self that usually tries to meet goals in that old hit-or-miss fashion.
To be successful with this new approach, it is important to cultivate discipline with regard to how your valuable time is assigned on a daily basis. In addition, this focus requires that you establish healthy boundaries with others, in order to concentrate on meeting your tasks, without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
We miss extra bits of knowledge that can add value to our lives. We sort of lack empathy because we’re multitasking all the time ~ Kim Stolz
Slow down and enjoy each breath you take. Bravely replace the negative self-talk with a soulful mantra. Take time to listen to the music of your own symphony. Courageously stand up against doubt and see the silver lining – even when it’s not readily apparent. Robustly welcome quality into your life, again and again. Repeating this exercise with each task will lead to exponential quantifiable progress, and all of it without the need to multi-task even once!
Remember, the purpose of this new and improved version of your top yourself, at your best game, is to allow you to bring more purpose to your role, while adding a sparkle and shine to your personal achievements, thus allowing you to truly savor the sweet taste of the success you have cultivated. This is what it means to truly cultivate a quality life.
