The Spiritual Cleansing Of Negative Energies
Negative energies and dark entities are sometimes misunderstood and misused concepts in spirituality. The term ‘negative energy’ is typically thought of as an ‘evil force’ that is intending harm to you, or something sinister that lies hidden in your home. But this is often not the case. I have a somewhat different view of this.
I believe much of the modern day fear and superstition around ‘dark entities’ may be due to the misunderstanding of old texts scribed in a style that may be too cryptic for today’s language and worldview. There are many instances in both Christian and Buddhist religious literature, for example, in which ‘demons’ are mentioned, but in my opinion they are referring to these phenomena in a poetic manner, as a metaphor.
One clear example of this is the so-called ‘Noonday Demon,’ or ‘Midday Devil’ found in Psalm 90:6 of the Hebrew Bible. It is a demonic figure believed to be active around noon every day to make people restless, distracted and excitable, causing its victims to neglect their work or duties. Well, we all know that sluggish feeling we tend to get after a lunch hour. The digestive process takes quite a bit of our energy, and spikes in our insulin levels, as well as neurotransmitters like serotonin and melatonin, doesn´t help to keep our focus on a specific task.
The solution proposed in traditional texts for this ‘demonic activity’ does not, however, involve exorcisms with Holy Water or other radical metaphysical interventions. Instead what is recommend is mere tenacity and patience. It is evidently more of a normal, physical challenge that one has to overcome, instead of it being a ‘psychic attack by the devil.’
The ultimate purpose of spiritual cleansing is to create a safe, immersive experience for your mind and body to connect in order to rid yourself of harmful energies ~ Dave Stopher
I believe this is the more sensible way to approach the idea of a ‘negative energy’ or ‘dark entity.’ In fact, I prefer to think of it as foreign energy which hampers our energy balance, or that of our home. It is an invasive energy vibration that breaks the spontaneous harmony of existence. That is all it is: an energy that brings turbulence to our life by invading our thoughts, emotions, and yes, sometimes also our body.
If a tree branch blows into your eye on a windy day, while you are walking outside, causing a burning itch for a few hours, you would not think the tree hates you, or was attacking, but you would certainly cleanse and medically treat your affected eye in the best way you know. A spiritual cleansing of negative energies is no different.
So, let´s deal with spiritual cleansing and psychic protection against ‘negative energies.’ When is the best time to do a cleanse? Maybe you´ve been having a particularly difficult couple of days, or weeks lately, or you seem to have the kind of ‘bad luck’ where it does not only rain…it pours! Maybe you think you are only stressed, or tired, or have some weird anxiety. For all of that, and more, a simple energy cleansing can restore your balance and make a difference in how you feel, while also conveying this inner harmony to your surroundings.
How to do it? There are an infinite amount of ways. I will mention two I am personally familiar with, and that I find very effective in my own spiritual practice.
The easiest method is especially useful if you are at work, or somewhere without much privacy. Preferably retreat to the bathroom for a minutes, and imagine a cleansing light energy coming from Heaven above, from the Divine Source. See it as a ball of white light above your head, just a few inches above the top of your head.
The only way to get rid of the impact of these negative energies is to really grow your own relational energy. The best way to grow in relational energy is to have better words, is to believe better words, about ourselves and others ~ Geoff Holsclaw
Once it is there, imagine it pouring white light all over your body. See it seep into your whole body, outside first and then inside, until you are completely made of light. Keep this image in your mind, while basking in the cleaning, healing feeling for a minute or two. Then allow the white light to go back to the ball above your head, and see the sphere return to its original source.
A more traditional technique is to add a handful of rosemary, sage and rue (herb-of-grace) to a pot with 60 ounces (about 2 liters) of water. Boil it for a couple of minutes and allow it to cool down to a temperature that will not burn your skin. Take a shower, as usual, and at the end empty the pot of herbal water over your body, front and back from the neck down (this is important in many traditions) and allow it to stay on your body just for a minute. Dry yourself without rubbing or scratching your body with the towel – just press the towel gently onto your skin. Most of the herbs will fall by itself, and what remains you can remove with your hands in front of a mirror.
If you take anything from this blog, I hope it is to think of those dreaded ‘negative energies’ as something that is a normal part of physical life and spiritual contrast. Cleansing is a way to naturally restore balance to your body, using our consciousness (mind), and maybe a few herbs, because our soul energy is fully empowered to live in this world, and to make its own space wherever we are. It’s just that sometimes it needs a bit of our help and attention.
