Care Of The Soul
One radical difference between care of the soul and a great deal of modern psychological work is that the former offers a profound appreciation for the personalities who are important in our lives, even if they are flawed people and even if the relationship is not perfect. Psychology prefers to analyze with the goal of increased understanding, yet understanding does little for the soul.
Imagine telling stories of those that have crossed over, not for insight into ourselves, but simply to establish a deep, continuing relationship with them. The soul is given eternity in that exchange, while understanding offers it little more than another fragment of logic. It has nothing to do with establishing a home for the infinite within our finite lives.
With all your science – can you tell how it is, and whence it is, that light comes into the soul? ~ Henry David Thoreau
It isn’t a question, anyway, of deciding whether we should or should not give attention to those that have crossed over. They present themselves to us in sought and unsought memories, in dreams, in visitations during the day or night, or through mediums. They may appear in an event that hearkens back to a felt experience, or they may inhabit our bodies.
Whatever your metaphysics or theology, whatever your beliefs and expectations, such visitations, signs or messages can be received by the heart without any need for mental interference. The great mystery of the ‘other side’, and what is beyond life as we know it, offers a constant challenge to our wish for understanding. Once again we should see relationship in service to the soul, rather than the other way around.

I just cannot agree that “increased understanding does nothing for the soul”?? If we don’t analyze, think, learn, find greater understanding we won’t have no karmic lessons. No spiritual development. No soul growth. Our soul incarnates into this physical lifetime in order to experience and learn!! When we are not using our brains we are not making free will choices.
Are you suggesting that we go through life without learning or increased understanding? Are you saying that the less we question and the less we are eager to learn, the more spiritual we will be? Are you saying that the only way the soul can evolve and become enlightened is by keeping your mind ignorant and oblivious?
The Buddha said “All that we are is the result of what we have thought. The mind is everything. What we think we become.”
And Edgar Cayce said “The spirit is life. The mind is THE BUILDER. The physical is the result.” Cayce also stated that our solar system is like a university. We are born into this earth because it is like a “place of higher learning”.
We are presented in this lifetime with various emotional, physical and mental experiences to challenge us for the purpose of overall spiritual growth. Having “bad realtionship” experiences with “bad people” is a part of that. And the more we can learn from that, the more we serve the evolution of our soul. If you don’t increase your understanding then you will keep making the same choices and repeat the same “bad relationships”.
Some of us even believe that we have have soul agreements with others before we come here, of taking certain roles in this lifetime, and then switching it around in another in order for the soul to LEARN.
Increased understanding DOES A LOT for the soul, here and on the other side. Maybe you need to reTHINK your theory?
Jade, thank you so much for your comments. I feel that I am not communicating clearly with regard to the layers of a human. Please accept my apologies. To clarify, I am strictly speaking of the SOUL level. The physical, emotional, mental, psychic, spiritual and essence levels are all quite different. Of course, “learning, greater understanding” etc. in each incarnation are very important as you pointed out. However, those are functions of the emotional and mental levels although they do, indeed, overlap in many cases. I have, in fact, seen and experienced my own soul and it was not interested in anything other than its own ISNESS. I am confident that will prevail infinitely although, of course, other parts will be concerned less with Isness and more with other issues. Ah, humans are SO complex. Again, thank you, and please know how much I respect your thoughts and ideas. Don’t hesitate to let me know if I can offer further clarity.
