All Hallows Month Is Ideal For Self-Reflection
I did a reading for a new client yesterday, and during the session, I kept hearing the word “roots.” I told her, “You should get back to your roots.” She confirmed right away that she’d been thinking about moving back to her hometown to be closer to her family and friends.
That got me thinking about how October is often a time to think about where we really belong in life and in the world. This season, we’re thinking about place, direction, and home. It is the ideal time to reflect on whether it’s maybe time for a change, or if we should return to our roots.
It also got me thinking more about my spiritual roots and ancestry. October is a time to think about our physical lives and the spiritual truths, values, and principles that have been passed down to us. Are we still following those principles? Are we living in a way that reflects the wisdom of those who came before us? This is the kind of reflection October brings out, encouraging us to reconnect with our roots and the bigger picture of where we’re headed.
October, also known as the All Hallows Month, has always had a special kind of magic about it. It has always been a big deal in many spiritual traditions, because it is seen as a kind of in-between month.
This month is a time when the physical and spiritual worlds feel closer to each other, synchronicities multiply, and messages from the unseen find their way more easily into our lives. It’s no coincidence that so many cultures honor the dead and celebrate the mysteries of life and death during this season.
Another client, who I’ve been working with for a while, mentioned earlier today that she’s been seeing owls everywhere… in her books, conversations, on her social feeds, and then even a live one on the roof of her neighbor’s house.

I told her that owls represent wisdom and the ability to see what’s hidden. She had been ignoring her growing unease about a business partnership. Writing down her fears that night gave her the clarity and courage to end the partnership before it caused more harm. She later told me she felt free, lighter, and ready for something better.
Stories like these are pretty common in October. They show how this month makes it easier to see what’s really going on, to pay attention to the signs that are there, and to trust the inner voice that’s telling us to be ourselves.
October is a great time to reflect and think about what’s going on in your heart and mind, and in your life.
For me, October is also a chance to take a breath. Last year, when things got crazy, I started doing a simple nightly ritual: lighting a candle, breathing deeply, and pulling one oracle card before bed. It took less than five minutes, but it changed everything. I slept really well, felt less stressed, and felt more in tune with the guidance I was getting in my readings and in my day-to-day life.
That’s the core of October’s gift: it’s a time to reflect, a moment when the veil between the seen and unseen is lifted, not just between worlds, but within ourselves. The noise of summer is starting to fade, and winter’s stillness is on its way. We’re in this in-between space, where we can get a lot of insight and inspiration if we’re open to it.
One of the best ways to tap into this month’s energy is through journaling. Spiritual practices like rituals, prayer, and meditation are all great during this time of year, but journaling really hits the mark for me in October.
October had tremendous possibility. The summer’s oppressive heat was a distant memory, and the golden leaves promised a world full of beautiful adventures. They made me believe in miracles ~ Sarah Guillory
Why? Journaling reflects the energy of the season. Just like trees release their leaves, we’re also invited to release what’s no longer useful by putting our thoughts down on paper. As the days grow shorter, journaling helps us explore the hidden parts of ourselves where we can face our truths.
Journaling in October isn’t just about keeping a diary of events. It becomes a sacred dialogue with your higher self, spirit, and the divine. You can express your thoughts, impressions, synchronicities, and emotions and reflect on them.
In October, journaling as a spiritual practice can go from being just a daily reflection to being a revelation or divine inspiration. It helps you notice the patterns in your life and pay attention to the quiet whispers of your inner guidance. You also sense the gentle nudges of your ancestors and loved ones in spirit more clearly. October, with its air of mystery and heightened awareness, is the perfect time to dive into this process.
Think of your journal as both a mirror and a lantern. It shows what’s inside you and highlights the path ahead. And unlike other spiritual tools, it just requires your honesty and your willingness to put pen to paper. It is also a great way to get away from all the digital noise.
If you’ve been feeling like you need to slow down, pay more attention, or figure out what’s next, journaling is a great way to honor this time. Set aside a few minutes each day, maybe with a candle, a bit of incense, and a warm cup of tea, and let your words flow. You might be surprised by what you find, and it could offer you some insight, comfort, or even a bit of foresight.

JOURNAL PROMPTS FOR OCTOBER
To get you started, here are some journal prompts ideal for October. Use them as doorways into your own inner wisdom.
1. What am I supposed to release this season, just like the trees release their leaves?
2. What patterns or habits have run their course, and how can I respect their completion?
3. Which roots do I want to strengthen—family, heritage, spiritual practices?
4. What parts of my life need me to trust the unknown and move forward with faith?
5. What signs or symbols have been appearing in my life lately, and what might they be telling me?
6. What are some ways I can get myself ready spiritually for the coming winter months?
7. What wisdom from my ancestors or spiritual lineage feels especially relevant right now?
8. What hidden fears or unspoken desires are you ready to acknowledge this season?
9. I’m looking for some advice on how to make more time in my day for myself. I want to find a way to reflect, rest, and practice my faith more regularly.
10. If October gave me one clear message for the months ahead, what would it be?
October is more than just a month of falling leaves and seasonal festivities. It’s a special moment in the year’s rhythm, a time when the veil is thin and your soul speaks more clearly. When you keep a journal during this time, you open yourself up to its lessons. You make space for new insights, release, and renewal.
The Universe is always talking, but in October, it’s really loud and clear. Your journal can be the tool that helps you capture those ideas, write them down, and let them guide you forward. This All Hallows’ Month, take some time to write. You might be surprised by what you say. They might just heal you. They might help you find yourself.
