The Calling Cards Of Spirit Whispers
I was thirteen years old, and out walking with my father when he said, “I want to talk to you about something”. I thought, “Oh no, is this going to be a talk about the birds and the bees!” And then he began, not a talk about the facts of life, but a little chat about what he called ‘The Spooks’.
My dad spoke about his conversion from atheist to spiritualist some ten years earlier. He told me how my mother had taken a bet with him and he lost. Losing meant he would have to accompany her to a spiritualist church in London. He went to the spiritualist church one Sunday night when Joseph Benjamin, a well-known medium, was on the platform.
Even standing right at the back didn’t stop this medium homing in on my father with a message from his recently deceased father. The message blew my dad away, especially when through Joseph Benjamin he was getting told off by his father about the way the tools he’d inherited were rusting away with neglect in the shed, amongst other things.
It seems all spirits need theatrics, eh? Even Christ himself requires incense and holy water. We’re a skeptical people. We need convincing ~ Megan Chance
Now, through my monthly psychic circle, I get messages from my father that is undeniably him. In our last sitting I asked my father why he’d been absent for a couple of months and the reply was, ‘I was learning Joy’. My father never knew joy in this lifetime, so I was pleased.
Spirit speaks to us in a myriad of ways. For example, I am an initiated Sangoma (the South African equivalent of the Native American shaman) and when I wear my traditional beaded headdress for throwing the bones, it’s as if I pick up whispers from the Ancestors and I imagine them perched on the beads whispering into my ear.
Last week I did a private sitting with a client who lost her eighteen year old daughter two years ago. Her daughter, Jess, always finds a way to bring her mom messages in our sittings, but during that session the room filled with the smell of incense. When I asked my client if she could smell it, she said yes, but thought no more of it, assuming I was burning incense in the house somewhere. Truth is I haven’t burned incense at home for over two years. But her daughter Jess always burned incense. On realizing Jess’s influence, my client burst into tears of joy.
There were some dowsing rods close by, which I grabbed to verify the experience as Jess making her presence known to us. The rods began spinning in different directions like I’ve never witnessed before, and it felt like they were dancing with joy.
For the sense of smell, almost more than any other, has the power to recall memories and it is a pity that we use it so little ~ Rachel Carson
As a twenty year old I was so tidy, I annoyed myself, so found it strange that my jewelry boxes were always in a mess. I found out why after doing some shopping one day for a pensioner who was renowned for her trance medium gift. We were drinking coffee when she went off into a trance like state, talking for a while in Welsh and then back into English saying, “I have Lali here and she is pointing to water and saying this is how she died. She is very attached to you and loves to play around in your jewelry boxes”.
Lali was nine when I was thirteen, and she used to follow me around like a puppy – such a lonely child of a show business single mother. She died one Christmas day at the beach and was amazingly still connected to me.
When spirit visit, they leave their calling card in so many forms. Now and again I enter my reading room early in the morning to be met with a beautiful smell of pipe tobacco and I’m still not too sure who that is.

A lovely comforting article, reminding us that we have not been left alone when our loved ones go home. Thank you Shani. I like to think that the pipe tobacco smell is James visiting you.
Love the article Shani. Our sense of smell is often ignored in our spiritual connections. The unmistakable aroma of my gran’s stews or the smell of her freshly starched laundry often let me know she is with me. Thank you
Great article, keep them coming..
