When I was a teenager, my father said in a very serious tone, “I want to talk to you about something important.

My immediate thought was, I hope this is not going to be a cringe-worthy talk about the birds and the bees. Please let it not be!

But fortunately it was not about the facts of life. Instead, it was an enlightening conversation about spiritualism and the afterlife.

My father told me about his conversion from atheist to spiritualist about a decade earlier. Apparently, my mother had made a bet with him about something that he had lost. According to their agreement, if he lost, he had to accompany her to a spiritualist church to attend a service.

So they went to the Spiritualist church in London one Sunday night when Joseph Benjamin, a well-known medium at the time, was scheduled to demonstrate on the platform. Benjamin was a prominent Spiritualist medium whose mediumship was highly regarded in those days.

Although my father sat all they way in the back during the service, that didn’t stop Benjamin from locating my father in the assembled crowd and delivering a profound message from my late paternal grandfather.

The message stunned my father, especially when Benjamin told him how disappointed my grandfather was that the tools he’d left him were neglected and “rusting away in the shed. And so it was that my father became an avid believer.

These days it is my turn to receive messages from my late father that are undeniably from him. One time I remember asking him why he hadn’t been around for so long, and his answer was, “I’ve been learning about joy.” My father never knew much joy in this life, so I was glad.

But he is not the only loved one I have had contact with over the years. Spirit speaks to us in many different and interesting ways and sometimes the messages are from someone we might never have expected.

For example, as a 20-year-old neat freak, I remember being constantly annoyed and finding it strange that my jewelry box was always in disarray. I found out why one day when I visited a retired friend who was known for her gift as a trance medium.

After we had coffee and talked, she went into a trance to channel for me. She spoke first in Welsh and then reverted to English and said, “I have a little girl here who is pointing me to the water. She says this is how she died. She is very attached to you and loves to play in your jewelry box.”

I knew right away who it was. It was a childhood friend, a few years younger than me, who always used to follow me around like a puppy. She was the lonely child of a single mother who worked very long hours. She tragically drowned at the beach one Christmas day.

When spirits visit, they often leave their ‘calling cards’ in unusual ways. One of the most common ways they do this is through smells, such as tobacco smoke or their favorite perfume.

For example, I remember once doing a personal reading for someone who had tragically lost her teenage daughter. During the session, the room suddenly began to smell of incense. When I asked my client if she could smell it, she said yes, but she had thought nothing of it, assuming that maybe I was burning incense somewhere in the house. But I hadn’t used incense in my home for years. Her daughter, however, loved incense and always burned some in her room when she was in this life.

Spirit Visitation Signs

Moving or disappearing objects: Spirits may move objects around, make them disappear and reappear in different places, or place items in unusual places to get your attention.

Sensing a presence: Many people feel a strong sense when spirit is with them, even if they cannot see or hear anything. This feeling can be comforting or frightening, depending on the situation.

Smells: Distinct smells, such as perfume, tobacco, or flowers associated with a deceased loved one, often indicate their presence. These smells have no obvious source.

Temperature changes: A sudden drop in temperature or a cold spot in a particular area can indicate the presence of a spirit. This phenomenon is often reported in haunted places.

Unexplained noises: Hearing unexplained sounds such as knocking, footsteps, or voices can indicate the presence of a spirit. These sounds often occur in a quiet environment and are not easily explained.
