Cleansing Unwanted Spirit Energies In Your Home

Benevolent spirit energies are everywhere.  Whether it be a loved one who has crossed over, or your spirit guides and angels. Spirit is simply around in every moment of our daily lives.  However, there are also earthbound spirits who have passed, but not yet crossed over. They have unfinished business in this world, or they have difficulty leaving the people and physical spaces that they had a connection to in this life.

These restless, earthbound spirit energies can wreak havoc in our homes and families. When I was a child, I had horrible nightmares. While we only lived on the main floor in my childhood home, I was fine. However, after my father had built the upper level of the house and I was moved into my pretty, girly bedroom, the nightmares began.

I never felt comfortable or secure in my new bedroom. Also, whenever I had to go into the basement, I would have to run down and back up, because of the ominous, icy cold feeling I would experience through my entire body.  The rest of the house however was never an issue.

I later inherited this house, after both my parents had passed.  I did not really want to own it, because even as an adult that same feeling in the upstairs and the basement was still haunting me, while the main floor felt warm and comforting. I refused to go there alone at night, and rarely alone even in the daytime. It was confusing and frustrating to say the least.

Then I learned how to sage and energy cleanse a home properly. My method involves white sage and a small white candle. I go into each room of a house, starting at the furthest room from the door and smudge each corner of the room. I slowly cleanse each corner and ask all unwelcome spirit entities present to follow the light of the candle as we progress through the house, room by room, towards the outside door.

My prayer for each room is: Spirit, I understand you feel trapped here; I realize you may be holding onto something here that you do not want to release. But you will not find your peace by remaining here. There is a new and better place waiting for your elsewhere. I am now giving you permission to follow the Light; go home now and find everlasting peace and unconditional love. Amen.

When I did this cleansing ceremony at my haunted childhood home, I felt the paranormal heaviness gradually lifting into lightness, as I moved from room to room. The emotions and feelings were confusing at times, but I persisted until every corner of each room had been properly smudged.

The last step was carefully taking the lit candle outside (without it blowing out) and setting it in a place that it could burn until it went out naturally.  Note, if you try this ritual yourself, never bring the candle back into the house. Be sure to dispose of it! This is important.  Once spirit follows the light out, it is imperative you do not use the candle again for any other purpose, nor dispose of it inside the place that you have just cleansed.

In the end I did not keep the house.  There were many negative memories in there for me, so I had to let it go.  It was as if the biggest weight of the world was lifted off me.  The new owners who bought the house lived in it for about two years. Soon after they left, the house caught fire and completely burned out inside. It was rebuilt after that.

Burning sage is one of the oldest and purest methods of cleansing a person, group of people, or space and of getting rid of unwanted spirits. The practice dates back to prehistoric times and it’s been documented as having been used in every corner of the world by our ancestors. ~ Colleen McCann

What I remember the most was them saying that before this happened, they started to feel “creepy energy” in there. I often wonder if that fire was a way to finally cleanse the negative energy and any remnant spiritual energy of the past. Was the fire caused by spirit that held on?

You may think now that the smudging did not make a difference in the end, but the truth is it was essential to me getting the house ready to sell and being able to release it.  I felt safe, secure, and calm. Now when I drive by the house, I feel a total sense of calm and peace which I had never truly felt before.

The reason I share this story, is to let you know that you may have to smudge and candle more than once, and that the results may not always be exactly as you anticipated. You may, for example, find a peace for as long as you personally live in that residence you smudge, however the problem may resurface for new residents when they move in.
