Empower Yourself With A Tarot Meditation
The Tarot is so much more than just a method of fortunetelling. Tarot can be used as a tool for meditation just as much as it is an aid for divination.
For example, you can meditate on one of the cards in the Major Arcana, to connect with that specific card’s archetypal energy. Connecting with the card’s energy can not only help you find the answers you need, but more profoundly it can also invite that energy into our life.
Every archetype can awaken within us certain a type of personal power. The Magician can inspire us to become more quick on our feet, as he is mercurial in nature. The High Priestess connects us more deeply with our intuition and higher self. The Tower can bring an immediate closure to a negative situation we cannot stand anymore, and so on.
Let’s focus on The Empress card with a more detailed analysis, to demonstrate how we can utilize her in meditation.
Symbolism Of The Empress
The Empress is the number 3 card in the Major Arcana of the Tarot. She is the archetypal queen and symbolizes all the riches of femininity. She is related to the planet Venus and the zodiac sign of Taurus, representing affectivity in all its fullness.
As an earthly partner of the Emperor, her archetype represents the earthly plane achievements and pleasures of the physical body, including motherhood. There is also a connection between the Divine Feminine or Divine Mother archetype, represented by this card, and the Earth as Gaia, our nurturing mother.
The Empress fills you with the entirety of the world’s beauty if you let her in. She shows you in no uncertain terms, that you are never, ever alone. You are part and parcel of the glistening, pulsating world of energetic and beautific connection. You are her and she is you. She is everything and everything is you ~ Sasha Graham
Traditionally, the Divine Mother is depicted as a virgin, such as the Catholic Madonna, for instance, or the Egyptian Nut. Her offspring is creation itself, in its spiritual aspect, but it remains a mirror of the feminine within creation. The Earthly Mother is Nature, voluptuous in her diversity and all-encompassing.
In Numerology, the number 3 of the Empress is the triad of the holy trinity, God as a full expression of harmony, or duality and that which transcends it.
In Kabbalah the Empress corresponds to The Path of Daleth, the fourth letter of the Hebrew alphabet, which is the path through which the bounty of spirit enters the world. In the Tree of Life, this corresponds with the path which unites the spheres of Chockmah and Binah, in the first stage of existence (the first triad). It is the connection between understanding and knowledge in their highest conceptions.
The Empress In Tarot Readings
In a Tarot spread the inherent quality of the Tarot Empress is fertility, abundance and fecundity, and she usually predicts a future manifestation of one’s desires. She is also is representative of pregnancy, both literally and metaphorically (such as giving birth to new ideas).
When referring to a person in a Tarot spread, she tells us about someone who is almost always a woman, intelligent and creative, with a commanding personality. Her characteristics in various readings may include:
Love and Romance – the feelings are passionate; there is a lot of imagination, intense communication, exacerbated sexuality or secret desire.
Business – social relationships are quite significant, so build, and guard them.
Money – an inflow of funds or the manifesting of financial prosperity.
Friendship – nurturing, generous friendship.
Family – a dominant mother; strong women in the family.
Health – good health and well-being; fertility and pregnancy; successful medical treatment or procedure.
Spirituality – the Higher Realm, a Divine influence is present and acting within you. An opportunity to question your motives and correct the course of action if necessary. Pay attention to synchronicities and omens.
The deep feminine, the mystery of consciousness, she who is life, is longing for our transformation as much as we are. She holds back, allowing us free reign to choose, nudging us occasionally with synchronicities, illness, births and deaths… But when we make space for her, she rushes into all the gaps, engulfing us with her desire for life and expression ~ Lucy H. Pearce
The Empress Meditation
A simple meditation can be much more rewarding than something more complex, because it allows us to put our effort and focus in the right place.
Start the meditation by looking at the Empress card. You can also use a print copy, or even a screen image on your computer or phone. Having read all the information and correspondences above, observe the Tarot image in silence, and pay careful attention to all its details.
Now close your eyes and visualize the card in your mind’s eye, but imagine it to be human size. Do not worry about the details and colors, just imagine being in front of a giant version of the card. Then enter the card, as if you are walking through a doorway. You are now entering the archetype of the card, aligning with its energy.
Spend some time inside the card. Feel immersed in the card’s energy. Think of any area of your life that could be helped by the power you feel there, and bring you personal situation to the realm of the card. Ask the card to bless the situation, to heal it, or fill it with its power. Allow the card’s colors, images, and emotions to entirely saturate your situation, as if there is a flood of power flowing to you from the card.
When you are ready, exit the card, and return to being present your body. See the giant card disappear and then open your eyes slowly. Then simply continue with the rest of your day.
This meditation narrative can be applied to any of the other Tarot cards. There are two things that you can gain from this type of meditation. It can help you find resources within that you did not know you had, including new ideas, attitudes, and inner strength. And the energy will touch your life directly, creating remarkable changes to the situation that you needed help with.
