My Favorite Psychic Movies
Due to the nature of my work, I obviously love watching movies about psychics and the paranormal. Although there aren’t a lot of really good psychic movies out there, I do have a few firm favorites. Next time you are looking for an inspiring movie about psychic phenomena or the supernatural, see if you can find one of the following psychic classics on your favorite streaming service.
The Dead Zone (1983)
Based on a Stephen King novel, this movie follows the life of a school teacher who awakens with psychic powers, after falling into a coma. The film stars Christopher Walken as a reluctant psychic, who hesitates to use his powers, which I think is common for many psychics when we first discover our abilities. Once he finally decides to use his gifts, amazing things start to happen!
Ghost (1990)
Many people are familiar with this film. It was one of the most financially successful films of the 90’s. Personally, I love it so much that I could just watch it over and over again! The all-star cast features Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg as a highly eccentric psychic. Romantic, funny and uplifting, this is one of my favorite movies about a reluctant psychic medium who is able to connect with spirit on the Other Side.
The secret of all greatness is to discover what you were born to do in life and then do it. You must find out your gifts and talents ~ Sunday Adelaja
Phenomenon (1996)
Suddenly becoming psychic, after watching a strange light in the sky, George (John Travolta) begins to experience paranormal abilities beyond his explanation. He is shunned by the skeptical locals in his town, for his seemingly odd behavior, which leads him to self-isolate. This is not uncommon for gifted people when they first discover they have psychic powers. But once George successfully predicts an earthquake, people start to take an interest.
The Gift (2000)
A clairvoyant psychic (Cate Blanchett) keeps seeing disturbing visions of a girl who has gone missing. Through a series of twists and turns, she is able to locate the girl and detail what has happened to her. But that’s not the end of the story. To avoid a ‘spoiler alert,’ I’ll just say that this movie cleverly demonstrates the power of psychic visions and clairvoyance.
The Green Mile (1999)
Based on another Stephen King novel, it is the story of a prison guard (Tom Hanks) and a very unique prisoner (Clarke Duncan) who possesses a number of psychic gifts. His ability to heal, as well as his keen ability to see visions, is intriguing and endears the viewer to this gifted character.
The Sixth Sense (1999)
Young Cole Sear (Haley Joel Osment) sees dead people. When his mother solicits the help of psychiatrist, Malcom Crowe (Bruce Willis) to support her son, things begin to unfold in the most interesting way imaginable. This film is a very vivid portrayal of paranormal encounters, mediumship, and childhood psychic experiences that many adult psychic mediums can relate to.
We live in a period of declining stars. Few celebrities these days (aside from the smoldering Angelina Jolie) seem to have complex psychic lives ~ Camille Paglia
Vibes (1988)
This is one of my favorite psychic movies of all time. Although it’s a bit ‘campy,’ the interaction between psychic Sylvia (Cindi Lauper) and skeptic Nick (Jeff Goldblum) is enchanting, full of adventure, and lots of fun! Sylvia follows the directives of her spirit guide, Louise, on a crazy adventure that takes her to South America, to explore hidden mysteries in the Andes. It is great fun for the whole family.
Hereafter (2010)
Directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Matt Damon, this tops the list as my favorite metaphysical movies of all time! Matt Damon plays yet another reluctant psychic, who is thrown into the lives of two other people who have both had life-changing experiences. As a gifted medium and channeler, George Lonegan (Damon) must help these people, who are searching for deeper understanding of the afterlife, and how to move forward after suffering loss. Even if you pass on the other movies listed above, Hereafter is one you won’t want to miss. Happy viewing!
