The Mass Extinction of Man

There are those who believe we may be facing extinction as a species – if we don’t change our ways. This idea is not as far-fetched as it may seem. The mass extinction of entire plant or animal families is something that has happened on several specific occasions in history.

The most well-known of these extinction events is the end of the ‘golden age of the reptiles’, when most of the dinosaur species disappeared. The small percentage that survived ultimately became the bird species that today still roam our planet. I have often wondered about the fascination children all over the world seem to have with dinosaurs. It is a subject that is a source of great enthusiasm for both boys and girls. Could it be that they intuitively remember the past, that the traumatic events of that time remains ingrained in our DNA to this very day?

It was only 73,000 years ago when humanity also faced the possibility of complete extinction. This happened when the Toba super volcano erupted on the island of Sumatra. It caused such a colossal explosion that entire ecosystems were disrupted and most of humankind perished, leaving only an estimated 10,000 survivors alive on the planet. Although this event is not considered to be one of the ‘big five’ mass extinctions, it is more than enough to demonstrate the true fragility of mankind and how vulnerable we really are to the innate power of the natural world.

But what does all of this doom and gloom have to do with our spiritual awakening, and your potential happiness as an individual? Well, because we do have a choice in all of this. When you face the real possibility of your own extinction, it is no longer so important how many cars you own, whether you are wearing the latest fashion or whether your jewelry is more expensive than your friend’s.

Finally meeting that boy-next-door will probably not make it all seem worthwhile either. Neither does it matter much if you get that house, or that promotion, or that award. No longer will it be all that important to acquire more material possessions, or attain greater business success, political achievement or sensual satisfaction.

If most of us can fully embrace our capacity to co-create a new reality from our collective consciousness, and if most of us choose to pool our efforts, we can ultimately choose to evolve our species and rise above the possibility of our own demise.
