How To Crystal Gaze

Many people are familiar with the popular culture idea of using a crystal ball for divination purposes, also known as the art of “scrying”. The truth is, this is an ancient art, and it’s not just about seeing the future! With some practice, anyone can use this unique and fascinating tool to gain insight into his or her life.

The first thing needed is the crystal itself. Clear quartz is a good choice for someone new to the art. As with any magical tool, use your instincts to select one that is right for you. A small one, no bigger than five inches in diameter, will work fine. Be sure to cleanse your crystal and smudge it of any negative energies before use. This will give you better results. Only you should touch your crystal ball; the influences of others will weaken its power.

To “charge” your crystal before using it, place it under the light of the full moon for several nights. You’ll need to do this before using it each time. You may also want to perform a cleansing or meditative ritual every time before you begin a crystal gazing session.

When you are ready to begin work with your crystal, find a time and place in which you won’t be disturbed. A quiet room with dimmed light is good, so that the crystal will glow and be backlit. Candles in positive energy colors, such as white, are also effective.

Focus on grounding yourself, breathing in and out, expelling negative energy as you exhale. This will help to open your third eye so you’ll be able to see beyond the mundane. When you feel completely relaxed and at ease, find a part of your crystal that draws you in particular. Allow yourself to fixate on that part and try to stay within this deep trance-like state if you can.

You may notice dark or smudgy images within your crystal. Try not to force yourself to see actual objects or people; just relax. Many people may not see anything until they are completely relaxed.

It helps, as with any divination, to have a specific question in mind during your practice. The more specific you are, the better results you will get. What you will see in your crystal is not, as movies would have you believe, the future or your “fortune”, but a reflection of your subconscious thoughts.

At first you may not see much; this is normal. Keep at it! There is no right or wrong way to gaze, and no two people will see the same imagery. If and when you do start to see images, don’t be alarmed and don’t panic. The more you stay in your relaxed, calm state, the more you will be able to see. Only when you feel you have seen enough, or the connection naturally begins to fade away, do you need to stop.

Be sure to go through a process of re-grounding, taking some time to eat or drink if necessary. Also, it is essential to thank your crystal for the insight it has shown you. When you are completely done, store your crystal in a safe, dark place.

If you also keep a dream journal (another playground for the subconscious), it’s good to keep a separate journal for your crystal gazing sessions to see how they overlap.
