Known also as the Vernal Equinox, it is an astronomical event that marks one of the two times of the year when day and night are nearly equal in length. It usually occurs around March 20th or 21st in the Northern Hemisphere.

During the equinox, the sun crosses the celestial equator and moves north. Many cultures and traditions celebrate it as a time of balance, renewal, and growth. As nature shifts into balance, we are invited to do the same — to clear away what no longer serves us and move into a season of light, action, and new beginnings.

Spring is a new beginning. A new sun rising. The dawn in the wheel of the year. At this time of year our minds are bright and alive with new ideas. Many of us feel inspired and excited to try new things. Life awakens in the warm sunlight and our spirits feel ready for a new beginning.

One of the longstanding customs associated with this time of year is the tradition of “spring cleaning.” Across cultures and generations, people have used this time of year to refresh their homes, clear out accumulated clutter, and invite new energy into their lives.

But spring cleaning is more than just cleaning up our physical space — it is a sacred ritual of renewal, release, and transformation. As the earth awakens from hibernation, we too are called to clear out the old and make room for new energy. From a spiritual perspective, this process is an opportunity to realign ourselves with higher frequencies, release stagnant energy, and invite clarity into our lives.

Clutter, both physical and energetic, carries the weight of the past. Old objects, especially those tied to emotional experiences, can trap memories and vibrations that no longer serve us. By consciously clearing them out, we signal to the universe that we are ready to move forward. This applies to relationships, thought patterns, and even beliefs that we’ve outgrown.

The Spiritual Traditions Of Spring

Spring and the Vernal Equinox are laden with rich traditions, beliefs, and mystical practices across cultures. It traditionally represents a season deeply intertwined with the notions of renewal, fertility, and growth, making it a powerful symbol in many religious and esoteric traditions. It is a time of renewal, reawakening, rebirth, hope, and the triumph of light over darkness as nature awakens after the silence of winter.

Ancient pagan cultures celebrated Ostara, a festival honoring Ostara, also known as Ēostre, the goddess of spring, dawn, and fertility. Her name is linked to the Old English word for the month of April, Ēosturmōnaþ, as mentioned by the 8th-century monk Bede.

Eggs and rabbits, now familiar as Easter symbols, were sacred to Ostara, representing fertility and the cycle of life. While historical records of Ostara are limited, she is celebrated in modern pagan and Wiccan practices during the Spring Equinox, honoring her as a bringer of light and life. Her story and imagery continue to inspire those who seek to connect with the cycles of nature and the themes of rebirth and balance.

In Christianity, spring is associated with Easter, which commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. This celebration of the triumph over death reflects the natural cycles of renewal found in spring. The use of eggs and flowers in Easter traditions echoes earlier pagan symbols of life and rebirth.

The Hindu festival of Holi, recently celebrated over two days on March 13th and 14th, annually celebrates the arrival of spring and focuses on themes of love, joy, and the victory of good over evil. Participants throw colored powders to symbolize the blossoming of life, unity and forgiveness.

Purim, recently celebrated on March 14th, is a joyous Jewish holiday commemorating the biblical story of Queen Esther, who saved the Jewish people from destruction in ancient Persia. Marked by feasts, costumes and the reading of the Megillah (Book of Esther), Purim symbolizes triumph over adversity and the renewal of hope. Its timing in early spring aligns with themes of rebirth and transformation, as winter gives way to new life. Just as nature begins to bloom after the cold, Purim represents the emergence of joy, resilience and divine providence, reminding us that renewal is possible even in the darkest of times.

In the Japanese Shinto tradition, the equinoxes are observed as Higan, a time to honor the ancestors and reflect on the balance of life. Families visit graves, perform rituals, and enjoy nature in keeping with the spirit of renewal of the season. In Japanese culture, the blooming of cherry blossoms (sakura) symbolizes the fleeting beauty of life and the renewal of the spirit. The tradition of hanami (flower viewing) invites reflection and appreciation of life’s fleeting yet beautiful moments.

In esoteric traditions, spring is seen as a time of purification. Practices such as herbal smudging, spring cleaning, or fasting are used to cleanse the body, mind, and spirit. The balance of the equinox is thought to provide an energetic opening, making it a powerful time for rituals focused on harmony, renewal, and connection with nature.

Modern mystical spring practices involve “planting intentions,” both metaphorically and literally. Just as seeds are planted in the earth, individuals plant new goals and aspirations for personal growth. Rituals such as creating altars decorated with flowers, greenery, and symbols of the season are common. Meditation and visualization practices are used to align with the regenerative energy of spring.

Across cultures, spring resonates as a season of hope, renewal, and a deep connection between humanity and nature. It is a time to align with the energies of transformation and personal growth. The burgeoning life of nature serves as a metaphor for letting go of old patterns and embracing new possibilities.

Spiritual Spring Cleaning

A powerful way to incorporate spiritual intention into your annual spring cleaning is through a cleansing ritual or ceremony.

Our homes are extensions of our energy fields. When our space is filled with dust, broken items, or things we no longer love, it can reflect and reinforce inner blockages. Spring cleaning is an act of self-care that helps us realign with our highest potential.

Smudging with sage or palo santo, using sound healing with bells or chimes, or even setting intentions as you declutter can enhance the effect. We can affirm each time we release:

I am releasing what no longer serves me and making space for new blessings to enter.

Consider the power of rearranging furniture or adding fresh flowers to invite new energy. Even opening windows to let in fresh air can shift the vibration of a room. These small but intentional acts raise the frequency of our environment, creating harmony and flow.

Creating Space For New Possibilities

I remember working with a client last year who had been feeling stuck for months — struggling with low energy, recurring relationship patterns, and a feeling of heaviness that she couldn’t explain. She sought guidance, and during our session I sensed that her home was holding dense energy from past experiences.

I encouraged her to do a deep spring cleaning, both physically and energetically. Together we identified key areas in her home that needed attention, particularly her bedroom, which was still holding the emotional imprint of a past relationship. I guided her through a ritual using salt, candles, and visualization to cut energetic connections and invite renewal.

A week later, she contacted me with excitement — she felt lighter, her sleep had improved, and, unexpectedly, a new career opportunity had presented itself. By clearing the stagnant energy in her home, she had made room for new possibilities in her life.

Spring cleaning is an invitation to release, realign, and renew — outer and inner. When we approach it with intention, it becomes a sacred practice that supports our spiritual growth. As we clear out the old, we make room for the universe to fill our lives with new energy, love, and possibilities. Now is the time to set new goals and plant the seeds of transformation.

This year, the Spring Equinox coincides with Mercury retrograde, offering a rare opportunity for reflection and course correction. Rather than seeing the retrograde energy as a challenge, we can use it as an opportunity to rebalance our lives and make meaningful changes. Spring brings the promise of new beginnings, and with mindful action we can align ourselves with its abundant, renewing energy.

Embrace this season with open arms, knowing that by releasing what no longer serves you, you are entering a season of growth, renewal and endless possibilities.
