Finding A Snow White Feather
Some time ago, I was sifting through my box of notes and papers collected over the years, and among all the documents and media cuttings, I found a list which describes the symbolic meaning of various colored feathers. Finding the list was a lucky coincidence. Or was it?
My husband and I live in a rural area outside a small town in South Eastern Spain. The people here are very friendly. Yet, without intending any disrespect, it is unlike many beautiful Spanish towns. I guess you could say that ours is somewhat soulless? It certainly is devoid of much in the way of any natural beauty, or cultural architecture. Another thing we don’t see much of either, is bird life.
More recently, I was thinking hard about an upsetting situation, while leaving the town hall. The outlook of the problem I was dealing with seemed bleak. But, as I left the building and turned a corner, I looked down and there was a beautiful snow white feather! A sign, or another coincidence?
A feather is a sign from the angels. It is a response to a question, a thought or an emotion. It’s their way of saying; “You are loved and are being guided through this by the angelic realm ~ Eileen Anglin
I lovingly held this white feather close to my heart, hoping that it is a sign of a deep wish I will be manifesting soon. My snow white feather certainly turned up in a most unexpected place.
Back home the large dream catcher I have in front of the window, reminded me more of the significance of feathers. And so, my thoughts returned to the list I had found in the box, which emphasizes the powerful symbolism of feathers.
In general, a feather itself is symbolic of freedom. Often restless individuals with a wanderlust choose tattoos of feathers. The specific type of bird’s feather they choose for their tattoo adds additional meaning. For example, ancient cultures gave deep meaning to certain birds, such as eagles and owls, amongst others.
Owl feathers, in various cultures, represent celestial wisdom, spirituality, culture, intelligence and honor. Eagle feathers represent strength, courage and conviction.
Culturally, for some, the eagle feather has always represented a special connection to the gods, because it can fly so high, like the gods themselves, and reach even higher realms. An eagle feather is dark on one side and white on the other, and represents the balance of darkness and light, as in Ying and Yang.
A peacock feather symbolizes royalty and great beauty. There are some who view the appearance of a peacock feather as bad luck. I’ve even heard of individuals carrying a peacock feather with them to attract a soulmate! Yet, another opinion of someone who adorns themselves with peacock feathers is that they are very ‘flashy.’
Our angels send us signs to let us know they are listening and working on our prayers and requests. Symbols like feathers are most important when they are meaningful to the person who receives them ~ Sharon Taphorn
Because the quill of a feather was used in writing, it also represents the ability to communicate our thoughts and ideas.
A veteran of the First World War, whom I once had the privilege of meeting, told me that if a feather was spotted on a battlefield, it meant that there was a dead soul moving amongst the living.
Many religions use the imagery of feathers symbolically, to depict peace and love. The feather as a Celtic symbol is said to invoke the sky gods. The Egyptians also associated the feather to sky gods, and it was used symbolically to depict truth and justice.
Feathers in the headdress of certain cultures show that they are in close proximity to the spiritual elements of nature. The person wearing them will represent a powerful leader who is trusted and honored.
A red feather, like a red rose, is associated with regaining strength and of course, passion and fire. A yellow feather reminds us to live in the moment and is linked to the intellect. A blue feather can remind us of the sky and symbolizes peace and inspiration.
A white feather is often related to a dove and can symbolize peace, purity, marriage and, of course is known as an angel’s ‘calling card.’ Finding white feathers are believed to be a common sign for angels wanting to make their presence known to us. These white feathers also tend to appear in the most unexpected of places – just like the one I had found.
I await my white feather’s message from spirit to manifest, and look forward to sharing its manifestation, in order to inspire others too.
