Leaving A Legacy – A Message From My Guides
As time goes on, it is natural to think of the impact you might have had on the people, places and things you have encountered over the years.
Some people become great inventors, physicians, leaders, politicians or investors, among many other noble professions. They can measure their legacies easily from the many lives they have touched with their work. Often their identities are household names and the entire world is familiar with their efforts.
But what about those of you who are living day-to-day, doing the best you can to keep your life in balance, your children educated and your mortgage or rent paid? What kind of legacy do you envision for your own family and for the world in which you live?
Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you ~ Shannon L. Alder
It is a fallacy to assume that one’s legacy must be counted in tangible terms. Your impact might be far-reaching and you might never be aware of the effect you have had on others.
The parent who instills strong core values that will be passed from generation to generation can claim a legacy of magnificent proportions. The teacher who molds young minds to aspire to bigger and better achievements might never know how much their structure and guidance help to form a solid base for future adults.
The manager who supervises with a fair and equal attitude might not realize how much the work environment is supportive to all and, therefore, subtly inspiring to employees. The volunteer who lends a helping hand or comforts those who are in need might not realize what they have done to engender newfound hope that will change lives.
If you live your life to serve others, even in the smallest way, you will leave a legacy of untold magnitude. The lives you touch will expand throughout your sphere of influence, and beyond. You will never see how many eyes have been opened, or know how many feelings have been soothed.
Ask yourself what you can do today to make even the smallest impact on another. Whether you focus on your family, your workplace or your neighborhood, any contribution will be appreciated and often will be multiplied greatly over time.
I think that if I can leave the legacy of love and passion in the world, then I think I’ve done my job in a world that’s getting colder and colder by the day ~ Lionel Richie
Treat people with respect. Find humor in stressful situations. Encourage those who have limited self-esteem. Lead by example. Persevere in challenging situations. Avoid pointing fingers and assessing blame.
It is important to acknowledge, however, that no-one is perfect. Remember this: “When all you can do is all you can do, then all you can do is enough.”
Understand that it is okay to lean on another and to show uncertainty or perceived weakness when encountering and mastering a new experience. Asking for assistance or brainstorming for new ideas can give someone else the opportunity to expand their own legacy by supporting you in achieving your goals and ambitions.
As you contemplate your legacy, count the blessings in your life and make a concerted effort to pay them forward in any way possible.
