Is My Child Psychic?

From The Sixth Sense to Poltergeist and the works of Stephen King, our pop culture landscape is full of fictional child psychics. Could you have one in your home?

Every parent thinks their child is special and gifted. In fact, all children are born with some degree of psychic ability, and some keep it throughout their lives. How can we tell, and what is the best course of action, when we find a psychic child in our midst?

The main reason people lose psychic ability as they age is because of some grown-up or authority figure dismissing these very real gifts as their imagination or ‘make-believe.’ Children don’t know what is real or not, and when they are blessed with psychic gifts, they will believe… even if you don’t.

Though you may not understand, it’s important not to dismiss the child with statements like, “It’s only your imagination,” or “Stop, you’re scaring me!” The more a child hears negative statements about their extra-sensory or paranormal experiences, the more they will associate their psychic gifts with shame, anger, humiliation, or sadness.

Every child wants to be loved and accepted by their parents, and when they hear, “I believe you,” or “I’m here to listen, tell me what you have seen,” they are more likely to open up.

Gifted children, no matter their particular ability, are likely to share many of the same qualities: unusual sensitivity; vivid dreams; connections to spiritual figures, such as imaginary friends or deceased loved ones; a love for animals; and unbridled creativity. Since children aren’t burdened with the same kind of hang-ups, insecurities, and social taboos as their parents, it’s important to pay attention to these traits. If spirit is trying to reach a child, it will, of course, succeed!

Most parents would be thrilled to hear their child was academically gifted, so, why not a psychically gifted child too? Many people fear what they don’t understand. If you suspect your child may have strong psychic ability, be supportive. Listen to what the child is saying, including anything you may dismiss as ‘impossible.’ Dreams, imaginary friends, conversations with beings not of this world… all can be connections to the spiritual realm.

Don’t force a child to practice his or her ability if they feel uncomfortable doing so, and don’t expect them to be a prodigy. The child may be just as awed by psychic power as you are. If they know that you are supportive and open-minded, they will want to share and explore with you. Many books and websites by psychics are available to help you navigate this new world. Make friends with other open-minded parents of psychic children; they will also have valuable wisdom.

Give your child a chance to share their experience with you, or with someone who may understand! Psychic abilities do tend to run in families, so it’s highly likely there is someone in your immediate surroundings that can understand and lend a compassionate ear ~ Amanda Linette Meder 

It’s tempting to label a child as telepathic, telekinetic, empathic, or clairvoyant. Don’t… at least not yet. No two children are the same, and neither are their abilities. It may happen that they possess more than one gift, or that their abilities may change or fluctuate over time. Support each of these children as the Divine messengers that they are, and be willing to listen to what they say with an open mind and open heart.
