Out-Of-Body Experience, Or Astral Travelling?

Out-of-body experience (OBE) is more generally known as astral travel or astral projection in esoteric circles. Many individuals find astral traveling helpful with their own personal development. They use this technique to visit places they would otherwise be unable to visit, or to meet up with loved ones on the other side. Astral travel is also a powerful way to meet up with your spirit guides, to visit future lives, and even for what is termed as “exploring the universe.”

Now and again, my cynical husband will let me in on some of his more ‘other worldly’ experiences over the years. The most recent revelation was about how he used to leave his body at will. Over time, I have read of, and learned of various techniques to leave my body at will, but never dedicated enough time to master the art of astral traveling.

My husband said he’d developed his own technique, but I don’t get the impression that he voyaged too far away from just looking down upon, and observing his physical form from above. It sounds as if he got bored with that, and consciously made a decision to stop this activity in his late teens.

He was in a car crash some seven months ago, and his vehicle plunged thirty odd meters into a rocky, dried up riverbed. The following morning, a neighbor and I took some photos of the crash scene from the road above. During a hospital visit I made to him at the beginning of his long recovery, he unexpectedly said, “Oh, I remember you and our neighbor Paul taking photos from underneath the car and discussing the wreck.” Could he have been out of his body whilst on life support, the day after the crash, and have perceived our photo taking activity from his hospital bed? Was he hovering around the vehicle? I certainly never mentioned anything to him about us taking photos!

My own OBEs relate more to when, during sleep, I would feel myself suddenly falling – that strange feeling many of us can identify with, when we feel we are plummeting out of control, and then a sudden jolt. I learned that this occurs when the soul re-enters the physical body after astral traveling.

One OBE which I recall vividly, as if it occurred yesterday, is one from many years ago, when I was in an intensive care unit (ICU) for cerebral malaria and other complications, including alcohol poisoning. I recall every visitor who came into intensive care to see me, and many details of those unconscious days. Hospital staff and visitors were amazed when I was able to recount details of their visit weeks later.

One past life regression experience I had could also be likened to an OBE, during which I hovered over what looked like the British countryside – very green and hilly. It felt odd; I certainly didn’t have a physical form. At the end of the regression my mentor asked me about the various past lives which I had experienced during the session, and when I told him about “feeling like a bumble bee” in one of them, he simply said, “You were checking out your next place of incarnation and you hadn’t taken on form yet – just checking out the territory!”

And it all felt so right and made absolute sense. You could say that I was in between bodies cruising above the green, green hills of England, which would become my birth country in this lifetime. I realize now, that despite never really feeling like I belonged there, that it offered me great experience for my own spiritual growth, which helps me with my work to this day.
