Mysteries Of The Moon Phases
Even the most casual observer knows that the Moon continually changes shape in the sky. This is because its regular orbit of approximately 28 days puts it at different points relative to the Earth and the Sun, making it go through phases.
So why should we care about this? Well, as the nearest celestial object to Earth, the Moon has a special place in Astrology, as well as the psychic realm itself. Our planet, as well as our bodies, consist of over two-thirds water, and therefore the Moon’s gravitational force affects us in different ways at different points in its orbit.
It’s worth noting here that the word lunatic comes from Luna, the Latin for “Moon.” But the Moon doesn’t make us insane, as some ancient stories would have us believe. However, a recent study suggest the Moon phases may affect our sleep patterns, and it has also been shown that the Moon influences the behavior of various animals.
Do not swear by the moon, for she changes constantly. then your love would also change ~ William Shakespeare
Different terms are used for the different lunar phases. ‘Waxing’ refers to the times when the Moon appears to be growing larger; ‘waning’ is used for shrinking. A New Moon is when the Moon’s face cannot be seen from Earth, because its bright face is between us and the Sun. The Full Moon appears when the Moon is on the far side of Earth and we see its full, silver disc in the sky.
The waxing phase is the perfect time to focus on growth, prosperity, or new beginnings. This is the ideal time for jump starting a project, inviting out a love interest, or asking for a raise? Go for it during this time. Waxing corresponds to Yang, or masculine, outgoing, positive energies.
On the other hand, a waning moon, or Yin, implores us to be more introspective and contemplative. If you want to rid yourself of negative energies or purge harmful feelings, this is a perfect time.
A lot of people, including practicing psychics, are intimidated by the Full Moon. It’s hard to hide anything under all that bright, silver light. Which is exactly the point – when the Moon is full, use that openness and honesty as a force for change. Be careful that you don’t let your energies overwhelm you. There’s an old saying among police forces and hospitals that “things get crazy” under a Full Moon, and this may be partly why.
Everyone is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody ~ Mark Twain
The New Moon is much more mysterious, like the feminine, mystical energy of Yin. What exactly is the dark side of the Moon hiding? Ask yourself this question when the shadow of the Moon is a dark circle in the twilight Western sky. Buried secrets and obstructed truths may come to light. Dreams become more powerful as visions and harbingers of our future.
If you have strong astrological influences with respect to the Moon, such as a Cancer sun sign, be especially aware of how its phases affect your mood and spiritual state. Knowing your Moon sign, which represents your hidden self, can also be very helpful in your quest. Like the Sun and the planets, the Moon also travels through the signs of the Zodiac, albeit much faster.
The Moon doesn’t have to be a mystery to us, even if its dark side is always turned away. Look up tonight, see what phase is before you, and use that as a starting point – perhaps “one small step?”
