Himalayan Salt Lamps – Are They For You?
Himalayan salt lamps naturally purify the air through ionization. Studies indicate that as much as a third of the world’s population reacts adversely to negative ions, and many people report that the air becomes easier to breathe when using a salt lamp.
Larger versions of these lamps, ideally hand-carved from the natural rock salt, are attractive and come in shades of red, amber, and cream. No two are alike! They weigh between 25 and 32 pounds and each will treat a space up to 320 square feet. Apart from the tabletop versions, did you know they are also available in a larger, half-dome size? Like their smaller versions, these lamps have multiple health benefits: relief from asthma and allergies, low energy, sleeplessness, and attention deficit.
Himalayan salt lamps purify air through the power of hygroscopy, meaning that they attract water molecules from the surrounding environment then absorb those molecules – as well as any foreign particles they may be carrying – into the salt crystal ~ Janice Taylor
In my opinion, the best feature of the half-dome lamp is that it makes an excellent natural foot warmer! They are electric and plug into any standard socket, and they emit a soft, ambient light.
Go ahead and order a few lamps for your home, office, or spa. Since we’re surrounded by devices which generate positive ions, such as computers, TVs, microwaves, a salt lamp counteracts this effect. They are also natural attractants for excess water in the air, which can cause allergies and allow mold or mildew to grow. Plus, there’s that clean, fresh scent!
The light itself is also therapeutic, not to mention attractive. Orange and pink shades are similar to those generated by candlelight or a fire, whereas shades of blue, such as from electronic device screens, can disrupt sleep patterns. Who doesn’t love a warm glow? Some even say it provides gentle relief from the seasonally based depression found in winter.
Salt lamps are also eco-friendly. They’re made from a sustainably sourced natural material, and their replaceable bulbs are designed to last much longer than a commercial light bulb.
As salt lamps have become more popular in recent years, many stores have begun to sell them, including the half-dome style. When you buy one, be sure to purchase a Himalayan lamp rather than a cheaper imitation. Since the half-dome style is heavier than a tabletop model, you may be able to save shipping costs by buying from a local retailer.
More than any other time in history, we are bombarded by positive ions, which is why making a conscious effort to introduce negative ions into our surroundings is becoming increasingly important. One of the best ways to do this is through the use of Himalayan crystal salt lamps ~ Carolanne Wright
Keep a lamp in each room if you can (and if your budget allows). If you can only afford one or two, the room where you spend the most time is the best bet. How about one for the office, too? If you’re unsure of what to ask for on an upcoming birthday or holiday, or want to treat a loved one, a lamp makes an excellent gift, too.
After a while, you’ll start to notice the positive effects of these beautiful lamps. Better sleep, fewer respiratory problems, improved concentration, and higher energy levels? Absolutely. If you’re still on the fence about salt lamps and all they can do for you, consider how much ‘stuff’ is in the air in all the places you spend your time. Isn’t it worth investing in a small, but highly beneficial piece of furniture?
