What Goes Around Comes Around

Karma is a very real thing. I know an older lady who firmly believes that she will never have to struggle coming in the door, whenever she comes home to her condo. She never has to set down any of her items to look for the right key to unlock the door and let herself in. There always seems to be someone there to let her in; people are usually going out as she is coming back in.

Amazingly, this appears to be true. I have never actually seen her having any trouble letting herself in, and it seems to be the case especially when she is bringing in groceries, or carrying a heavy load.

I asked her why she thinks this is, and she told me that when she was younger, and her legs used to worked better, she used to always help elderly people. She would help them to their car, or help them bring things in, or help them cross the street. It was something her parents taught her from a very young age – to always be ready to lend a helping hand to children and the elderly.

I asked her if she believed in Karma, and she said she had heard of it, and that it made sense to her. “What comes around, goes around,” she said.

Her story is a wonderful example of how being taught right from wrong, and learning about kindness early on, can actually be in our best interest in the long run. I see so many unkind people these days going out of their way to not help others. The unkind have this cold-blooded air of callousness about them. They never smile and have no interest in connecting with their fellow man.

Kindness matters. It has a domino effect in how others see us. If we are unkind, others will go out of their way to not be in our path, and they certainly won’t have the desire to help us in our time of need.

There is a very kind couple who lives across the street from me. I often see them working in their garden. The elderly lady who lived next to them was very frail, and they knew this. So, once a month they would take the time to mow her lawn for her. Sadly, she passed away last year. A young couple has since moved into her house with their toddler. Then, one afternoon, I noticed one the new neighbor was now mowing the kind couple’s yard? How unexpected and unusual.

Recently, I walked across the street to check out the couple’s garage sale. I mentioned to them how I would always see them mow the old lady’s yard. I also told them I was so happy to see they now have a kind neighbor themselves, since I noticed him mowing their lawn.

Apparently the man came over and asked if he could mow their yard for them. He said he enjoys mowing, especially since his little boy loves to ride on the mower!

What goes around does indeed come around. If only everyone understood the law of karma.
