One Scary Ghost Ride

I was born in New Brunswick, on the East Coast of Canada, and through a variety of moves over the years ended up living in the province of British Columbia, which is on the opposite coast.

There are 12 children in our family and for most of the  years that I have lived in the West, I was the only sibling residing out this way. Consequently, there were many times when I would take a plane trip and head East to visit my rowdy, motley crew.

A few years back, after a four hour plane ride, I ended up at my little sister’s place in Ontario. Because my sister prefers driving, we hopped in her car the next day and she drove for another six hour trip, and we landed at my brother and sister-in-law’s home in Montreal. We spent a casual few days visiting with them, as well as other members of our clan.

The thing I find really scary about ghosts and demons is that you don’t really know what they are or where they are. They’re not very well understood. You don’t know what they want from you. So it’s the kind of thing you don’t even know how to defend yourself against. Anything that’s unknown and mysterious is very scary ~ Oren Peli

Then the four of us decided we would make the long ten hour car trip to new Brunswick, to catch up on all the latest news with the rest of the gang who lived over there.

Our brother Venard had passed away many years earlier. He and his best friend drowned at the tender age of 12. Even though it had been an extremely long time since he had left us, we always felt he was still with us. Any opportunity we had to get together, we would begin talking about him and it would always seem as if he were in the same room with us. This was something we never questioned no matter how much time had gone by.

On this particular occasion we began to talk once again about our beloved brother. As our conversation continued, I began to realize that my legs were starting to shake. This was an extremely perplexing situation and I certainly couldn’t comprehend exactly what was occurring. The longer our chat went on, the worse the shaking got, until it seemed as if a locomotive had got a hold of my body. The vibration stayed in place for a few hours and then finally left.

It was not until many years later that I learned my highly spiritual brother Venard was able, from the force of his own energy alone, to be able to come right inside a recipient who was willing to receive him. As it turned out, this was to be the precursor to the next interesting event that was coming our way.

We headed back to Montreal and spent the next couple of days with my brother and his family. We would take his two dogs out for walks, go grocery shopping, and spent the evenings just enjoying each other’s company.

My brother’s home only had two bedrooms, one for him and his wife, and the other for his two girls. That meant my sister and I had to sleep in the living room. This was not a problem for us, we are quite small in stature and don’t take up too much room.

Sometime during the night we heard creaking on the stairs and immediately the larger dog began to growl, which we thought was odd, as obviously he would be very familiar with all members of the household, regardless as to what time they were moving about.

The next thing we heard was someone in the bathroom and very distinctly the sound of running water. By then the dog was extremely agitated and becoming so aggressive we called to my brother. He came downstairs, and of course we are expecting him to tell us one of the family members is about, but again, that was not the case.

Our forefathers looked upon nature with more reverence and horror, before the world was enlightened by learning and philosophy, and loved to astonish themselves with the apprehensions of witchcraft, prodigies, charms, and inchantments. There was not a village in England that had not a ghost in it, the church-yards were all haunted, every large common had a circle of fairies belonging to it, and there was scarce a shepherd to be met with who had not seen a spirit ~ Joseph Addison

He checked everyone to find out his wife and children were still asleep, so we had no clue as to what the creaking on the stairs meant, or how water came to be running in the bathroom.

We did not sleep very well that night, mainly because this was such a disturbing event and we could find no explanation for it.
The next day we set off in the car for the six hour drive back to my sister’s home. It was a nice clear day with little traffic on the road and we presumed we would enjoy a pleasant uneventful trip.

About an hour or so after we were on our way, it appeared the interior of the car was becoming quite cold, which in itself we did not give too much credence to, although it was certainly not a cold day outside. Next we noticed that the car was filling up with what appeared to be a fog, and it was getting colder by the minute. My sister had the heater on full blast and it seemed to be working efficiently, however we could not get the fog to clear, or the car to warm up.

Slowly I became aware that someone or something was present in the car with us. To say I was terrified would be an understatement. I was trying to alert my sister as to what is happening, but found the best I could do was stutter, “Th..th..ere..is..sssomeone…in..ttthe..bbback..ssseat…”

My sister finally became aware of the situation and we held on to each other for dear life, as we barreled down the highway. There was no way under the sun we were going to look in the back seat. The car became so foggy and cold we had no choice but to stop the car at a little cafe.

It was now about four o’clock in the morning. Anyone who knows me. knows that I am one of those people who cannot eat late at night, but here I was at this early hour of the day stuffing food in to my mouth. My sister then looked up at me and said, “Kitty, there is someone in you eyes.” I did not let panic get a hold of me, although I was completely terrified, as I could certainly feel something was with me. We left the cafe and continued down the highway with no further incident.

As we discussed what we thought the problem was, my sister and I both felt the being in the back seat of the car was our father. He was an evil, terrifying human while he was here in this existence, and there would be no reason to believe he would be something different in the afterlife.
