Giving Of Yourself Is A Win-Win
One of the best ways to feel better about yourself, while making a difference, is to get involved in your community. So many worthy organizations need help year-round, even though the obvious time people think to give is during the holidays.
Think of the Marine Corps’ Toys for Tots program. You can certainly donate toys any time of year, or else participate in a fund-raiser in your area. Likewise for St. Jude’s Hospital, which provides medical care at no cost to children with life-threatening illnesses or injuries. Taking part in a fun walk or run, or donating time or goods, is a great way to raise money for a wonderful cause.

Of course, giving money or goods directly is only one way to help. Volunteer hours cost nothing and give so much to others. If you want to spend meaningful time with others, who may need companionship, ask at your local retirement community, veterans’ home, or children’s group home. If you’re a pet lover, animal shelters and rescues are always in need of extra hands. You might also consider offering to transport animals to foster homes, or foster yourself.
Many of us also have special talents or skills: anything from playing an instrument, cooking, or a specialty craft. Consider teaching at a local school or community center. Since so many schools lack funding for programs, like arts and music, it’s more important than ever.
The start of the year is also a perfect time to clean out closets and attics. Chances are there are plenty of usable goods that can be passed along to others in need. Groups such as Dress for Success collect business attire for job seekers, outgrown school uniforms can be given to children in need, and even gently used toys would be appreciated. Many groups have donation boxes, or specific needs can usually be found on each group’s website. Be sure to check your local community center or city hall, too…it may be that a family in your neighborhood needs help!

Sometimes the very best gifts we can give are our time and company. Think about just giving an hour of your spare time each week, and seeing what happens. You may find that you enjoy it so much that you want to give more. If you’re looking for full-time work, often volunteering is a wonderful way to get a foot in the door and learn about an organization. You’re more likely to be hired as an employee if you volunteer first.
Giving of yourself is a win-win situation: not only are you helping your neighbors, you’re doing something positive for yourself.
