There Are No Shortcuts To Personal Fulfillment
I was recently at an acting class where we were working on how to develop a character. We were given a personal piece to work on that we would perform in front of the class.
After I had done my part, my teacher had explained me that I had a problem that most actors have, namely that I expected the performance to be perfect the first time around. There was no in-between. I didn’t want to do the monologue if the character wasn’t already fully developed.
He then began to walk me through steps to develop my character even more deeply. “Let’s try an accent. No, that didn’t work. Let’s play it as if you were angrier. Yes, that’s closer. Now let’s play it as though you don’t give a hoot! Perfect! Now we have something to work with.”
He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance ~ Friedrich Nietzsche
I realize that my teacher was correct. Sometimes in our life, we want to go from a negative state of mind to a completely positive attitude. Or we want to go from having a melancholy attitude to always being happy. It seems that we don’t realize that there are certain steps that are necessary to take before we can reach a final outcome.
When you’re trying to go from sad all the way up to happy, or a negative to positive, you first need to take baby steps. Find the nearest better feeling that you can reach from where you are at the moment; reach for an emotion or thought that feels just a little bit better than the one you are currently experiencing. Even if you just go from absolute anger to mere frustration, for example, that’s already a huge step in the right direction. And from that feeling of frustration, you may then realize that it all wasn’t as bad as you perceived. And then things begin to look a little brighter.
It is better to take many small steps in the right direction than to make a great leap forward only to stumble backward ~ Chinese Proverb
Try not to expect to jump from one state of mind or feeling clear over to another, without taking smaller steps in-between and doing some personal exploration along the way. You will only hold yourself back by continuing to picture where it is you want to be and then knowing that you’re not there yet and that it feels completely out of reach.
Pay attention to the work that will get you there; take the smaller steps that are necessary to explore your final outcome. That is what it’s all about anyway: not the outcome, but all of the work that’s done in-between. That’s where the personal growth, passion and fulfillment come from.

Great article Bobby – those baby steps are what counts – thank you!
This is so true Bobby. Most of us are a bit impatient when it comes to allowing new states of being to arise. I find that how I am being this day will affect how I feel tomorrow.
