The first time I saw the pyramids of Egypt I was 12 years old. I had traveled on holiday with my parents from our home in Ethiopia. The sight of them awed me, and I believe profoundly changed my life. I became fascinated with ancient Egypt after that day. I was obsessed with the history, mythology and culture.
As a teen and young adult I read every book on Egypt I could get my hands on. One of my first books was The Book of the Dead by E.A. Wallis Budge. Later, as an adult, I studied Egyptology and began leading spiritual tours to Egypt.
One of the very first places I would take my groups was to the Sphinx and the Pyramids at the Giza Plateau. This I believed would be the perfect initiation into the mysteries revealed during the whole trip – a cosmic alignment with the energies of that magical ancient culture of Egypt, and with the greatest temple on earth.
From the heights of these pyramids, forty centuries look down on us ~ Napoleon Bonaparte
The entrance to the Great Pyramid, also called the pyramid of Cheops, is on the north side. It was a false entrance, tunneled into the side of the pyramid by treasure hunters in 813 AD. This tunnel leads to the Queen and Kings Chambers. It is a dark, narrow passageway – steep and strenuous – that is not for the claustrophobic.
At the top of the stone stairway is the Queen’s Chamber, where we pause for a breath and a silent meditation to embrace the energies of the goddess. We begin our climb again and then arrive at the most challenging section of this passageway – where the space only allows one to walk bent over.
At the end of the passageway we enter the final and most impressive chamber of all – the King’s Chamber. It is a large rectangular room with a stone sarcophagus in one corner. Above us, in the high stone ceiling, are two air shafts. One shaft points to the Sothis or South star, and the other to the North star in the Milky Way.
It was here in this mysterious King’s Chamber that the final stage of initiation for the priesthood would take place. It was called the Sekhem chamber, or the womb of the second birth. The initiate, having made it this far, would lie down in the sarcophagus and his or her astral body would rise from its human shell and float through the air shafts to the seed ground of the stars. If the astral body went towards the Sothis star the initiate would be reborn again on earth. If the astral body lifted toward the North Star, the initiate would not reincarnate and would become perfected in the eyes of the gods.
Through the mystic passageways and chambers of the Great Pyramid passed the illumined of antiquity. They entered its portals as men; they came forth as gods ~ Manly P Hall
Over thousands of years, strange and life changing experiences have happened to those who have spent time in the King’s Chamber of the Great Pyramid. Napoleon Bonaparte spent the night in the room and saw his whole destiny flash before his eyes. Even after all this time the sarcophagus still vibrates with a mystical energy, like a cosmic time capsule. Naturally, I wanted to be the first of our group to lie in it!
With no fear and much anticipation I climbed into the granite chamber. The hard stone enveloped me, like a pair of warm, safe arms. My eyes closed and I felt my soul lift from my body. Upwards I flew into the night sky. Bright, twinkling stars surrounded me – so close that I felt that I could touch them. I felt at one with the universe and a part of every living thing on earth and in the sky.
A name then came to me… Ankhen Min Auset. But that is a story for another time.
