Clairaudience or ‘psychic hearing’ is a remarkable psychic ability.

The term clairaudience is derived from the French for ‘clear hearing’ and it refers to the ability to hear sounds, voices and musical tones that cannot be heard by the normal human ear.

All people have this innate ability to hear outside the normal range, but very few are attuned to hearing or listening to these spiritual messages.

In fact, I am convinced that most people have had at least one experience of hearing someone calling their name, when no one is around; or you may have heard people whisper or having a conversation just before you wake up in the morning.

There are many accounts of clairaudients who did remarkable things over the centuries, including prophets and historic figures. For me the most famous clairaudient is Joan of Arc, a brave woman who led the French army in several successful battles. Sadly, she was later burned at the stake for the crime of heresy. Joan claimed she heard the voice of God and attributed her military decisions and victories to these messages from Heaven.

Clairaudience is most often experienced in dreams, or in altered states of consciousness, for example when one is in a trance. Even some of the most gifted clairaudient psychics and mediums have to raise their energy vibration before they can truly utilize their ‘Divine Ear’.

Internal Clairaudience

There are two forms of clairaudience. Internal or non-physical clairaudience refers to the ‘hearing’ of ideas, thoughts or astral voices. These mental words, or inner sounds, can best be described as audible thinking.

Internal clairaudience is very similar to the sensation of ‘thinking aloud’; it is very much like recalling a song from memory, or when you try to remember the voice of someone you know. Some compare it to that ‘little voice’ all people hear inside their mind from time to time, especially when they are about to do something they are not supposed to!

External Clairaudience

The second form of clairaudience is more rare and more distinctive, namely external or physical clairaudience. This is the ability to physically hear noises, sounds, voices or even musical tones that seem to come from an external source.

Your mind knows only some things. Your inner voice, your instinct, knows everything. If you listen to what you know instinctively, it will always lead you down the right path – Wolfdyke

The most significant characteristic of external clairaudience is that the voice you hear is very different from the sound of your own voice; the voices or sounds are often unfamiliar. Hearing these external sounds is therefore a very different experience compared to internal or non-physical clairaudience, which is often more like hearing the sound of your own inner voice.

Clairaudient ability is often accompanied by the gifts of clairvoyance (seeing) and clairsentience (feeling). Interestingly, clairescence (smelling) is often also found among psychics who have external clairaudient ability.

External clairaudients sometimes experience pleasant smells, such as flowers or perfume, before they hear the actual voice or sound that comes with it. I don’t experience this very often, but I have smelled things like candle-wax, leather, wet sand, sea water and roses.

Hearing The Roar of the Cosmos

But how is it possible for someone to hear these sounds or voices, and where is it coming from?

Psychics and mediums, who are blessed with this ability, experience it in different ways and attribute it to different origins. Some hear the voices of people who have crossed over; some hear their spirit guides or angels, while others simply hear vibrations, musical tones (bells ringing, flute sounds) and other sounds, such as buzzing, a singing noise or even the ‘roar of the ocean or cosmos’.

It is generally understood among scientists that the Universe does not consist of matter. Instead, everything we know and experience as our reality consists of energy vibrating at different frequencies. And, of course, where there is vibration, there must also be sound!

Every shape and form, whether it is an object, plant, animal or person, has its own vibrational signature, and therefore also ‘transmits’ its own, unique sound.

It is interesting to note that all forms of music, no matter from which culture it originates,  is based on only seven basic notes. It is also interesting that each of these seven notes are associated with one of the seven chakras.

The whole Universe is a symphony of sounds, but most of it is outside our normal range of hearing. A clairaudient has the ability to tune into some of these vibrational sounds, almost like one would turn a radio dial to pick up a specific channel or radio frequency.

Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP)

Electronic voice phenomena (EVP) is a technique that now enables us to capture some of these vibrational sounds. EVP’s are unexplained voices or sounds that show up in recordings made with modern electronic equipment. It is a very popular technique, often used in paranormal investigations.

If you are curious to experience what clairaudients hear, I recommend you listen to some EVP recordings; there are many sources available on the internet. The first time I heard an EVP recording, I was amazed and relieved. I immediately recognized the tonal quality of the sounds, and I was very excited to discover a way of demonstrating to other people an almost accurate version of what I sometimes hear.

Conversations With Your Refrigerator?

External clairaudient ability can be very overwhelming for people who do not know what is happening to them. In my childhood I experienced these voices and sounds as very traumatic and confusing. I also kept it a secret, until well into my adulthood, because it is something that is generally frowned upon and even associated with mental illness or demonic forces.

Fortunately, when I studied psychology at university, I came to realize that what I was hearing was very different from a mentally disturbed person having a conversation with their refrigerator! Today I am very grateful for this gift.

So, next time you hear someone calling your name, and there is no one else around, stop and listen, it is not your imagination…there may just be a special message coming through for you.
