There is no better time in our world for initiating the inner reflections and work needed to start your journey on Empathy. I see what is happening in the news, and it is nullified by our manic attention to our PC’s, games, cell phones and devices.
This world has changed – no longer is terrible news that interesting to some – their empathy has disappeared into the who’s who of social networking sites and they are discarding common sense and in seeing a 2D world, simply cannot be feeling empathy for others. To me this is much like addictive behavior, making us act out of kilter due to our own self made technological havens. Go to almost any site, and most people will be posting jokes, their nights out, the coffee they just drank, and not one mention will be made of what our common goals are as mankind or of a terrible tragedy – because video feeds are funnier.
Technology… the knack of so arranging the world that we don’t have to experience it ~ Max Frisch
Our brains are now thinking in short term attention spans – according to some studies, the way we are learning now, some tests have showed children from PC’s are now unable to socialize – they would prefer to update their page, but have literally forgotten how to speak to another human!
I have seen some improvements in the messages online, but what concerns me – you as mankind are always there. Always behind the glow of your PC, posting messages – but not making significant enough physical changes to make your (our) world a kinder place.
This world needs you to look deep within yourselves to activate the now long-buried emotion that has been blunted by media over-stimulation. As the first proponent and writer on Empathy, when I began developing it a decade ago, the world was a much different place. In the ten years that have followed, I have witnessed am increasingly passive populous – insidiously passive due to their addiction to hardware, and having been emotionally blunted by it, are now indifferent to disasters, war or crime. It’s easier to rent another movie, and lose yourself in that, and not meet your inner child, which is sweetly sleeping beneath the surface.
The saddest aspect of life right now is that science gathers knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom ~ Isaac Asimov
When I developed this idea, I did not anticipate the formidable enemy we are up against – the enemy that makes us lose our feelings – our own opinions – yet we are still glued to our screens daily, instead of actually socializing in person with some of the friends on our lists. The enemy, despite all its blessings and innovations is technology – and social media can be nothing but a non-validated gossip mill heightened by our continuous need to play the social media ‘game’. I have a firm belief that we need to learn, especially from our past, but we are so present in the moment, we do not remember it what our forefathers did wrong and thus we may be doomed to repeat it.
Remember how some cartoons were banned because they were too violent? Where we over-reacting? Perhaps Bugs Bunny may have been seen as an innocuous 2D character, but in fact, it was just the precursor to what levels this type of ‘innocent 2D violence’ can be taken to now – we ignored the psychologists who said this would cause an emerging violent society – but here we are, blunted by violent games, movies and the media, least of all, Bugs Bunny.
I can tell you this – having lived in a difficult political climate once, that what many of us are suffering from a psychological condition called de-sensitization. This is when you have been exposed to so much violence you do not see it anymore. Violence includes the way we treat each other, and I see this good portion of the time. Social mores of have almost vanished.
It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity ~ Albert Einstein
We need to start looking into ourselves, remember the souls we have, which are poorly expressed through our technologies, and start reassessing the way we are treating each other. Then, I feel, the true ‘path’ of being able to understand others will emerge. It may or may not take a long time to see this, but if a person is just a cipher to you, imagine you are becoming one to them as well. Remember you are more than that. You are human, not part machine!
End the Insanity! Your prescription or recommendation for the summer months is to ditch your PDA’s – your cell phones – take a break from the networking sites – and try and lower your time on the PC or playing games down to one hour a day. I have done this.
Initially it was very difficult to not always automatically and by reflex check my mail – but I can finally say, that I am calmer and can see my inner self better without music, TV, and the Internet. I have been doing a fair bit of reading – you would love it too! I still leave the PC running though, as it’s been a companion to me for 30 years! I will update you on my final step sometime, which is once I have checked email, to actually turn it off, and not leaving it running incessantly for the fix of the silicon glow.
We are becoming the servants in thought, as in action, of the machine we have created to serve us ~ John Kenneth Galbraith
My hope is that some of you and your severe addiction to media gossip, false friend lists, your need to look at funny pictures and videos, and take a firm stand, check yourself, and start living life without this medium.
Make some friends – do something active, something you have always wanted to do, leave your towering list of friends (of which you may only know 3% well) and look into who you are, and you may not find a need for this at all, besides doing your homework, managing a business or checking your email. You also may become a more compassionate person – the real you will emerge – the love that is within us all.
Will we allow ourselves to become so desensitized that we lose all our humanity – our future, or will we take the leap of deprogramming ourselves from the cult of technology, delve into the mysteries of empathy?
