Once upon a time we were dinner. Larger, more aggressive creatures used to eat humans all the time. To this very day circumstances exist where we could still be dinner.
For instance: go to the wilderness of any continent with just a sleeping bag, a good book, a lamp, and no weapons to protect yourself and see how many days you last before you are food for other creatures.
In spite of this potential ‘guess who’s coming to dinner’ scenario that exists still today, humans have placed themselves at the top of the food chain. This is because of the dubious theory of survival of the fittest…a proposition based on the notion that beings who occupy the most spaces on this planet are considered to be the most successful.
Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. He does not give milk, he does not lay eggs, he is too weak to pull the plough, he cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits. Yet he is lord of all the animals ~ George Orwell
Humans may indeed occupy the most spaces on earth. Yet, from the words survival and successful an ironic question arises. If we are threatening our own existence through overpopulation, pollution and destruction of our biological environment, and the extinction many of earth’s other creatures – all of which are crucial components of our survival – can this quagmire we have orchestrated within the most spaces actually be defined as successful?
Isn’t that actually like being considered the most successful beings because you occupy the most spaces in a toxic waste dump? Doesn’t this just make us a short-sighted species who have simply bullied their way into the most spaces?
Nature is neutral. Man has wrested from nature the power to make the world a desert or to make the deserts bloom. There is no evil in the atom; only in men’s souls ~ Adlai Stevenson
And doesn’t our self destructive behavior put us on the menu again? You know…dinner for the worms and bugs in the ground where all of humankind will eventually end up as we push ourselves into a permanent dirt nap?
Fortunately, we have begun to individually and collectively take action to change our destructive behavior and continue to raise more awareness of how connected we all are to our own destiny, the fate of our earth and all of her inhabitants. Let us hope this quantum leap of consciousness has come in time.
