Are You A Giver, Or Taker?

click here for a free psychic reading at PsychicAccess.comEver had one of those days where you feel as though you’re at your wits end? You thought to yourself, “I can’t handle this anymore. I’m not even sure who to turn to, to support me!” You probably found yourself feeling stressed, overloaded and ready to explode, or perhaps just feeling exhausted, drained, like you’re a car for which the fuel light came on 20 miles ago.

There is only one thing you can do in these situations. Stop.  Pull over. You need to assess your situation. When I work with people who are feeling either of those intense states of being, I help them figure out which category they are falling into at that moment. Are they a giver or a taker?

Many of us think that we are never ‘takers,’ but truth be told, nearly all of us fall into that category from time to time.  There’s nothing wrong with being a taker, the same as there is nothing wrong with being a giver. That is, as long as you are equaling out your exchange.

If you are always a taker, depending upon others for physical, emotional and spiritual support, you are going to soon find your lush forest of support become a dry empty desert. When there is no equilibrium of give and take, people will naturally pull away from you. Individuals can only take the sense of draining for so long.

If you are not exchanging the same value of energy with others, such as love, support, or kindness, the relationship becomes one-sided, and usually dies. Even plants and trees that receive water and nutrients from the earth, give back by providing homes, refuge, food and oxygen for animals and humans to use. You too must always give something back.

The same principle applies to the ‘givers.’ More often than not, this is the person that I’m working with. They are exhausted. They may feel helpless, hopeless, or even be completely indifferent and stoic, because they are completely drained. I’m sure you’ve heard the analogy of the oxygen mask on the airplane? As part of the safety instructions when you fly, the attendant will tell you: “If you are traveling with young children or see someone else struggling, put on your oxygen mask first, and then help others.”  The meaning being, you must take care of yourself first, before you can be of any valuable assistance to others.

I find that some people acknowledge this analogy, but maybe it’s been used so often it has lost its meaning? So try this instead. Take a deep breath… breathing in good energy and life giving oxygen. Then exhale… expel all that negativity, all the lower energy. But wait… don’t breathe in again, just keep exhaling.  Keep exhaling. And keep exhaling! Do you see where I’m going with this? By the natural law of our being, you must both inhale and exhale in an equal cycle. You cannot inhale only or exhale only. It simply won’t work, and nothing good can come of it.

Life is a balance between giving and receiving. The more you give, the more abundance will fill your life with joy ~ Debasish Mridha

So, always remember, there is nothing wrong with giving or taking. You cannot always give, just as you cannot always take.  There must be equal balance. So, when you find yourself overwhelmed, drained or ready to explode, analyze the situation. Sometimes the difficult part is being prepared to do what is necessary to remedy this imbalance and bring equilibrium back into your life. If you’re not able to figure it out on your own, it may be the perfect time to sort it out with a spiritual advisor.
