I have done thousands of readings for people from around the world, and I can assure you that fear is part of the human condition. It is not only a valuable asset to recognize danger (emotionally and physically), but it can also be an opportunity to face the fear that is holding you back from living your best, authentic life.
Fear is a reaction to something, or someone, that one perceives as dangerous, threatening or potentially painful. Fear is not necessarily a bad thing, as it helps us avoid dangerous situations, like touching a very hot surface, or swimming in rapidly-moving water. It can also be related to loss of a loved one. If, for example, a person is between the ages of birth to 18 years and dependent upon a parent to meet basic needs, the fear becomes very deep-rooted, and the same is true if you are older and suffered many or even one significant loss. We can also become frightened before speaking to a large group of people, when boarding an airplane… or just thinking about it! Some of us fear clowns or a wild animals.
You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You must do the thing which you think you cannot do ~ Eleanor Roosevelt
Fear is a reaction to a stimulus and affects us emotionally, neurologically, and somatically (physically). When we are frightened, a fight-or-flight reaction occurs. The brain launches a chain reaction which can include panic (fear that you feel you have no control over), racing heart, sweating, dilating eyes, tightening muscles. Some of us have ‘fear dreams’ where we are trying to scream, but no sound comes out and then we wake up sweating, while our hearts are racing and muscles tensing.
We don’t consciously control the fight-or-flight reaction. Our brains identify a threat and send out impulses to the rest of the body. The severity of the reaction depends in part, on whether the fears have been dealt with in a therapeutic way. There are many therapies that tap into the emotions you’ve stored from past events, like Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP).
In my psychic work, I can see when past events have triggered a reaction in the present. It is my belief that for many of us dealing effectively with the present requires healing of the past. If not worked through, fear can prevent true happiness. Psychologically speaking, we may unconsciously choose a partner who feels comfortable because they exhibit familiar behaviors, for example.
Spiritually speaking, I believe that the Universe gives us an opportunity to work through and resolve our issues by presenting stimuli that trigger past fears. One sign for me when past fears are entering into the present, is spontaneous over-reaction. Recognition is the first step in recognizing and conquering past fears that are no longer useful.
I believe that knowledge is power and working with this information will result in a fuller life and happiness. Each person has a set of induced fears. I use the word ‘induced’ because we are arguably not born with fear. One technique I recommend is to ‘talk’ to your fears, especially if they are interfering with concentration or your ability to get things done. Fear, if not resolved or recognized, can cause us to make decisions not in our best interests.
The most powerful fear in disrupting romantic potential is fear of abandonment. During normal infant development, before reason, disappearance is absence. The brain has not yet developed the ability to reason. When a mother leaves the infant’s visual and auditory space, she doesn’t exist. The infant cries, and feelings of abandonment and fear are foremost. In a positive environment, mother returns again and again. The infant’s brain is developing along with repetition and she successfully passes through fear of abandonment.
Fear keeps us focused on the past or worried about the future. If we can acknowledge our fear, we can realize that right now we are okay. Right now, today, we are still alive, and our bodies are working marvelously. Our eyes can still see the beautiful sky. Our ears can still hear the voices of our loved ones ~ Thich Nhat Hanh
But what if the child really is abandoned physically or emotionally? We will see this fear underlying that child’s behavior in adult life. Of course, abandonment can be perceived at any time in life and have a traumatic effect, but what I encounter most often in psychic readings is that people can hold on for dear life to a relationship, for example, that no longer serves them, because of their fear of being abandoned.
You can recognize past fear influencing today’s situations by its intensity. The ability to apply rationality disappears. For example, your romantic partner is verbally abusive, non-responsive, doesn’t return calls or texts, has actually said he’s no longer interested… yet, you hold on.
