You are not your thoughts, or your feelings. You are the soul who has the ability to observe and experience those thoughts and feelings. You’ve may have heard this before, but the concept is one that has had such a huge impact on my life, I simply have to share it!
When I made this realization, I had already been working on my own inner dialogue. Until I paid attention to it, I hadn’t even realized how harsh it was. Our minds are often full of chatter which, when left unattended, can become a breeding-ground for limiting belief patterns.
As my awareness increases, my control over my own being increases ~ William Schutz
Once I realized I was spiritually separate from my thoughts and feelings, I began to objectively observe them. As a natural consequence of this path, I found myself asking some really compelling questions. What am I believing about these thoughts? What kind of emotions are these thoughts bringing up?
This kind of self-reflection opens a conversation with your soul, and your heart. Your mind is designed to keep you safe. This means keeping you confined within your comfort zones. Your heart and your soul on the other hand, want you to grow. To learn and play and explore in this lifetime.
Taking an honest and compassionate look at your thoughts can help you understand where you may be holding yourself back. How you may be creating unnecessary strife and resistance in your life. Where are you resisting the flow? Which thoughts and feelings are lowering your vibration?
Basically, instead of automatically ‘buying in’ to all the thoughts and feelings you experience, the idea is to take a step back and check them out first. I would say the most important question this process leads to is: how can I shift my perspective about these things, to become more in harmony with that which I wish to manifest?
I once heard an analogy about this topic which compared our minds to a garden. We must tend to the garden of our minds and we can choose what we wish to plant. We can plant flowers and food, or we can allow weeds to overtake our fertile ground.
We are so powerful.
Instead of following low vibration chains of thought, break them as soon as you identify them. Let go of aspects you can’t control. Return your focus to what you have to be grateful for, and focus on the joyful moments you wish to experience.
Self awareness is one of the rarest of human commodities. I don’t mean self consciousness where you’re limiting and evaluating yourself. I mean being aware of your own patterns ~ Tony Robbins
This does not mean you should never have negative thoughts or feelings. These are natural, and an integral part of the human experience. It’s important to honor those feelings. If you’re sad, it’s okay to cry or express what you are feeling. Embrace the fear or sadness. If you’re angry, it’s okay to communicate this in a respectful way, and let it move through you. The idea here is to actually let it move through you. Look at it as you experience it – instead of reacting from it – and then let it go.
In taking the time to have this discussion with myself on many occasions, I have discovered some really surprising things about my belief system. One of the most personal and painful realizations I made was around feelings of unworthiness, and how this had held me back for years. I would shy away from certain opportunities, because I felt like I would never be good enough. I actually believed that!
Once I realized how I had completely shut down some of the things that were most important to me in life, I had the motivation to shift my perspective. It took time, and I faltered and even failed at some things. But I’ve been growing and I can look back and see exactly when that shift took place in me and how it changed the direction of my life.
I won’t say it’s easy, but I will say, it’s worth it. With conscious self-awareness we can find greater understanding about ourselves, how we need to heal and grow, and where we need to be more compassionate with ourselves and others.
