Spring is one of those times of year that we attempt to bring renewal into our lives, and change for the better. Perhaps we attempt to change old habits, or create new ones. Have you ever tried? Yes, but have you ever accomplished them? Have you ever stopped to wonder why, so often, you haven’t been able to make long term change?
Everyone wants to make change. I am really going to lose weight. I’m going to stop smoking. Oh my, I’m going to quit swearing. I’ll quit procrastinating, or stop doing that obnoxious thing I so often do. I’ll start exercising. I’ll be a better person. I’ll organize my life. I will find time for change!
We truly believe that we have the will power to succeed in instituting these changes into our lives. Maybe for the first few days it actually goes okay. So, why don’t these changes become permanent? Why can’t we seem to follow through? Why can’t I change my life?
Habit is habit and not to be flung out of the window by any man, but coaxed downstairs a step at a time ~ Mark Twain
It’s wonderful to have a life. How do you make it work for you. It seems you were born with a little computer in your head. Trouble was no one loaded the software program called All The Great Habits You’ll Ever Want, or Need.
Instead, every day, a new event was posted and recorded in your subconscious mind and you used what was happening in the moment to get by. They worked and you survived another day. The next day those same solutions were readily accessible and you got through the day again. These events formed your habit patterns. These solutions, thoughts and feelings became the foundation for who and what you are, including habits, good and bad.
We are all taught to bathe as a youngster. Now, we don’t think about every step of the process. We just do it. That wasn’t true when you were being taught. Mom washed behind your ears and all the way to between your toes. We learned to do it and those actions were reinforced with, “Don’t forget to wash behind your ears. Did you brush your teeth?”
We may have made personal adjustments to the system, when no one was looking, but after repeating this process over and over again a habit was created. The information was shifted from your conscious mind into your subconscious, which is where all habits are stored. Now you clean yourself up hardly thinking about what you’re doing.
This process works the same way with every habit you now desire to change, from smoking, to overeating, procrastination, or telling bad jokes.
You know that you did not have a smoking habit the day you took that first puff off a cigarette. You had to learn how to smoke and you had to do it again and again and again, before you enjoyed smoking and truly becoming a smoker.
Once that habit of smoking was programmed into your subconscious mind, including the emotional feelings surrounding smoking, it became you. You reinforce it with statements like, “I feel relaxed when I smoke. I make great decisions when I smoke. A cigarette tastes great after a good meal.”
Habit is a second nature which prevents us from knowing the first, of which it has neither the cruelties nor the enchantments ~ Marcel Proust
Now you have feelings connected with the physical act. You’re experienced! Your subconscious mind, where your emotions are stored, has been taught to give you the emotional response you want with each cigarette. You’ve engrained and reinforced the habit.
Your conscious mind reasons and analyzes why things are the way they are, even though often these are incorrect. The conscious mind is also where your will power is stored. Will power’s function is to give you a temporary boost of mental adrenaline to help you in a situation. It was never meant to create permanent change! It’s the conscious mind from which most people declare their new desires.
Okay, you’ve been smoking for several years. The physical habit of smoking and its emotional response has been ingrained in your subconscious mind for some time. Your conscious mind is now saying that you wish to stop smoking forever. The conversation goes as follows:
Conscious Mind: We’re quitting smoking now. Did you hear that idea Subconscious Mind? You’re going to quit smoking.
Subconscious Mind: Huh!?
Conscious Mind: Do you like that idea? Shall I give you the plan now?
Subconscious Mind: What! I like smoking. I like the taste. It makes me feel relaxed. I smoke with my friends every day. Go ahead try to stop me.
Conscious Mind: Okay, I’ll try!
So, now you are consciously using your will power to try not to pick up that cigarette after each meal, on your coffee break, when you get in the car or when you get up in the morning. At the same time your subconscious mind is still sending you the feelings that you are in the habit of getting in each of those situations. This is why you ‘crave’ cigarettes.
After a few days fighting those cravings, your will power caves, and the habit continues. You can apply any habit to the above scenario, including the habit of low self-esteem and lack of confidence.
The second half of a man’s life is made up of nothing but the habits he has acquired during the first half ~ Feodor Dostoevski
Perhaps you’ve been caught up in negative self-talk for years and wish to change. Repeat this positive affirmation, several times: “I’m a wonderful person.” Since you have no emotional feeling to support that statement, your subconscious mind is going to reject that idea instantly! You have to teach yourself how to think and feel differently about yourself and the world around you. The only way to successfully do that is from within your own subconscious mind.
Hypnotherapists are trained professionals, who guide you into your subconscious mind using relaxation and deepening techniques. These consulting hypnotists act as personal motivational coaches, inspiring and enthusing the subconscious mind to want to create those changes using positive suggestions and affirmations. Once in the subconscious mind you can release the feelings connected to the habit you want to end.
Now you can picture and feel yourself as a non-smoker, to truly accept yourself, to easily say no, without feeling like you’re missing something. Get the idea? It’s a matter of re-training the subconscious mind for the positive. You can create the lifestyle you truly wish to create, filled with love and health and forgiveness. All you need to do is release the old patterns and bring in the new. To be successful, tune into your subconscious mind.
Go into hypnotic trance while focusing on the changes you wish to make, relax, release blocks preventing you from achieving those goals and imagine how wonderful you’ll feel when you’ve already accomplished them.
You can now have the most successful spring renewal ever! This time your desires will be more than just a wish, more than just trying. You will be empowered from within. You will be confident in knowing that your desire to change will be more than just another struggle. Find peace and freedom in your new found truths. Live the freedom of choice that is your birth right!
Relax and let go of worn out habits. Rejoice, for spring is a time of celebration for your resolved accomplishments.
