Have you ever heard of the term ‘monkey mind?’ It originates from ancient Chinese and Japanese Buddhist teachings. We all experience it from time to time. In contrast to thinking clearly, monkey mind feels restless, unsettled, unfocused and uncontrollable. We think too much about the next text message, passing an exam, being able to pay next month’s bills, and whatever else lies in our fear centers.
This state of mind can take over if not managed, resulting in high anxiety. We lose our ability to think or to connect with what lies beneath these runaway thoughts. Our thoughts adopt a distorted sense of reality; we act on them only to find that the other person has no idea what we are talking about.
The monkey mind thrives on the sum total of all these thoughts and actually creates our worst fears. We will most likely fail that test because we are so afraid to fail — and then we’ve reinforced our thoughts by failing. Energy goes where thoughts flow.
Buddha described the human mind as being filled with drunken monkeys, jumping around, screeching, chattering, carrying on endlessly. We all have monkey minds, Buddha said, with dozens of monkeys all clamoring for attention ~ BJ Gallagher
So, couldn’t people be happier substituting positive thoughts for negative ones? We can! You can! You can start by your willingness to give up monkey mind and practice mindfulness in addition to some other techniques, as outlined below.
I have found that practicing daily for a month creates a greater connection with the Higher Self, the egoless part of ourselves that knows everything. You become more connected to the Divine and the collective unconscious. When you tune in, the feeling is spectacular as the truth is so clear. You are reset to the pure essence of your Being.
When we engage in monkey mind, there are always underlying emotions, too painful to deal with consciously. Events that happen during daily living can kick-start a runaway mind. The following are some techniques I’ve found helpful for taming monkey mind:
Identify monkey mind
Repetitive thoughts replay in your mind when you wake up, go to sleep, work, eat, perform daily activities. You feel anxious. Thoughts interfere with your sleep, appetite, concentration, happiness. You have become depressed, feeling hopeless.
Discover your underlying feelings
Identify what triggered monkey mind. Compare underlying feelings to the event that triggered runaway thoughts. Do some writing. In one column, write your monkey-mind thoughts. In the second column, write the feelings associated with each thought.
Sometimes you have to forcibly remind yourself that the mind is built to chatter and to make predictions—but that most of what it predicts doesn’t actually come true. Think of all the times the fears that your mind comes up with haven’t actually materialized. ~ Alice G. Walton
Practice mindfulness during daily life by being in the here and now. If you are driving, focus on it, focus on whatever you are doing at the moment. Focus on activities outside your feelings such as cooking, physical activity…whatever you enjoy.
Stay in the moment: focus only on whatever you’re doing, whether at work, driving, eating, trying to fall asleep. Think only of that. If monkey mind occurs, then give yourself permission to indulge for the moment. Then re-focus on the activity in which you’re engaged. Practice. Practice. Practice
In my personal experience, only two events have preoccupied me to the degree that I’ve listened for hours to recorded mantras and the mantra music of Snatam Kaur, as well as chakra clearing guided meditations by Anthon St. Maarten.
