The Truth Shall Set Your Free

For years she had a recurring vision that left her with more questions than answers. There were physical symptoms that went hand-in-hand with those visions, for she could hear the pounding of the blood rushing through her ears and she could smell the inside of the building she ran into. She also remembered the thoughts that were racing through her head, “I can never tell anyone about this…” She had no idea what it was she was withholding from herself and others.

Smells, feelings and memories that recreate those physical symptoms surfaced for her many times during her lifetime. Over the years she sought help in trying to figure out why she was so utterly terrified and scared  She had sought out a hypnotherapist to take her back to that period in time, in hopes that the whole truth would be revealed, to no avail.

It was apparent to her at that time, that there may never be an answer to these visions and memories that haunted her. In her own words, she “pushed them aside.” She no longer felt the need to talk about the incident, for it never led anywhere but to more questions.

I received a call from her not long ago. She was excited and flustered all at the same time, just repeating to me that she finally knew; she remembered!  Now, able to tell her story in vivid detail, she shared her experience with me.

The curious part was that simply looking at trees triggered the flood of memories. As she explained to me, she was not thinking of the vision at the time. It was the trees that reminded her of a relatives farm, which her family visited often. Remembering this was when the flood gates of her memories at last flew wide open. The fear and the inescapable trauma she had felt all that time was in fact due to her being sexually molested by a cousin.

It was very telling in regards to her behaviors, understanding where these behaviors and thought patterns stemmed from. Her young being was too scared to tell and just blocked out the entire experience, except for the feelings of fear, shame, and hurt.

The one thing she believed was most important is that she did not feel like a victim anymore. In fact, she now felt free. She knew the truth now and so many things that had never made sense all fell into place for her. We had the most heartfelt talk.

The relief she felt standing in the truth finally set her free.  Gone was the consistent gnawing of a lifetime mystery. She had struggled with relationships and sex most of her life and now understood where her feelings of mistrust and anger stemmed from.

From that point on, we were able to work with her new found freedom. She felt no need to confront her cousin, but rather forgave him. She had not seen, nor spoke to him, in over 30 years. There is no desire for her to confront him.

I must say, I was astounded by her strength and took something from it myself – the joy of truth. There is indeed significance to the Biblical saying, “The truth shall set you free.” For the first time in my dear friend’s life, she really is free.

We now work together rejoicing in every situation that makes sense to her, for this experience did not cripple her, it empowered her. She took the time to mourn her lost innocence, not dwell on it, for it had long passed. She now knows she has the power to change her future, because of the truth revealed. She looks forward to forging new, healthier relationships and now knows that she has the power to alter her own behaviors.

There is tremendous power in knowledge and the truth, for it is what we decide to do with it that alters the course of our lives.
