Attaining Peace

I was thoroughly frustrated with that statement, as there was so much opposition in my life. Like most people, I have had struggles that lasted not only months, but decades. I faced adversity not only once or twice, but repeatedly. I also had to manage all these challenges on my own, due to traveling on my own, starting my own businesses, and surviving immense loss, among other things.

At the time my well-meaning friend had simply not experienced any of these life challenges to the same degree, thus I did not believe her. To make the choice to feel joy seemed resolutely trite, in the face of such constant, episodic misfortune!

In truth, she was not too far off in that statement. Except, it was not a conscious choice, or something of cultish free will. It was more of an attitude that came over me after repeated misfortune, which led to a toughening up, a new approach, a singular mindset, a resolute focus.

It was not that I was going to ignore bad events from now on; it is just that I became very good at meditation in the face of fear, anger, frustration, noise, or anything exterior. This took years to achieve and did not announce itself or suddenly appear in my life – like a shining emblem of achievement that I could say I have attained. Nor would I say that I have completely attained it.

Yet, after almost two decades of near constant loss, I would say that one has no choice but to choose to go with the easiest path, and that is the path of peace, the one of least resistance, and the one that helps you let go of any fear or anger, thus changing losses into wins.

This is not an easy place. I still feel anger, sadness, frustration, fear. I still get sick and experience suffering. But one difference emerges: I no longer succumb to it. I still have to recover from loss. I still get heartbroken. I still form attachments. Yet, there are significant differences, and that is that I simply, through adversity, cannot hate, nor hold a grudge, nor hold onto anger.

Contrary to popular belief, empaths are highly responsive people who can feel anger, disapproval, and hate, not just love and compassion. Yet, you can also through a degree of exposure learn to simply get used to these feelings and transcend them if you understand them. If you are feeling them yourself, you may reject them. If you feel them through others, you may forgive them. This is not pity, but it is understanding, only because you have been through these feelings yourself.

The range of emotions one feels through the perception of others can be a spectrum, but they need not be dwelled upon and thus may not be absorbed or taken on. In the end, you feel peace, you take on a place of calmness. You only feel love in the darkest of days, faith instead of trust, peace even when there seems to be none, and even if it is only your own perception, it is your perception that creates your world, and is entirely attainable.
