Chakra theory originates from Hindu mysticism. There are seven main chakras (there are others too) in the body. Chakras are also known as energy vortices. Each chakra is associated with a different color, as well as various physical, emotional and spiritual issues. Reiki is an example of a metaphysical system of energy work that uses the chakra system as the focus of intent.
The root chakra is located at the base of the spine where the coccyx is located. It is associated with the color red and our feelings of stability and how we relate to the physical world. Some of the issues related to this energy vortex are problems finding housing or work, or an inability or unwillingness to take control of our lives. Problems with this chakra may also show up as an inability to create organization when dealing with tasks and jobs.
The chakras or force-centers are points of connection at which energy flows from one body of a man to another…all these wheels are perpetually rotating, and into the hub or open mouth of each a force from a higher world is always flowing ~ C.W. Leadbeater
The sacral chakra is located at the sacrum in the area around the spleen. It is associated with the color orange and relates to sexuality and emotion. The sacral chakra regulates our ability to form emotional connections with others.
Physical issues connected to the sacral chakra are problems with impotence, problems related to sexuality and reproduction, as well as psychological challenges with intimate relationships. When we have issues with the sacral chakra we may find it hard to let ourselves feel for others and we may feel guilty about our right to feel our own feelings. Other areas that can show up as problems are eating disorders, drug problems, and alcohol problems.
Solar Plexus Chakra
The solar plexus chakra is located just above the navel near the top of the stomach. This chakra is associated with the color yellow and is connected to self-empowerment. A strong solar plexus chakra allows us to be well-balanced in self–confidence and our levels of self-control. This chakra is also connected to our sense of humor, along with our wit and intelligence.
Physical issues can show up as digestive problems, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), colitis, ulcers, and diabetes.
The heart chakra is housed in the chest in the area of the heart. It is associated with the color green and it is our emotional center. It regulates our ability to love others and to receive love. Forgiveness, romantic love, compassion, and platonic love are all connected to this chakra.
On a physical level, this chakra is tied to issues of the chest, which includes heart and lung problems, pulmonary disease, breast issues and breast cancer.
Chakras, as well as auras and electromagnetic fields, are as old as the earth itself. The chakra system, in fact, is a part of the ancient and lost mysteries. And, in the end, the chakra system in our bodies is how we find our way back to the most ancient mystery of all – God, the Oneness, the Omniscient ~ Rosalyn L. Bruyere
The throat chakra lies in front of the throat and is connected to the color blue. This chakra helps determine how well we communicate honestly and openly with others. It helps decide our ability to trust and to be trustworthy. It helps decide our capabilities to speak truthfully and fairly.
Physically, this chakra is related to issues or the mouth and neck along with thyroid gland and hyperactivity.
Third Eye Chakra
The brow chakra or the Third Eye is in the middle of the forehead, above the brows. It is associated with the color indigo and connected to our intuition and psychic gifts. The ability we have to be self-actualized and to develop psychic abilities, as well as, to have empathetic skills is connected to the Third Eye. This chakra helps determine our ability and willingness to deal with our baggage.
Physical problems in the brow chakra can show up as migraines, visual problems, and mental disorders.
The crown chakra is at the top of the head. It is connected to the color violet, or no color at all. This chakra is associated with our connection to the Divine and to know where we stand in the bigger picture of things. It is the “highest level of the chakras.” It is also closely related to our spiritual growth.
On a physical level, blocks to this chakra can be seen in flu-like symptoms.
