I read an article by Sally Kempton some time ago, and this paragraph stuck with me: “In the Indian tradition, life is said to have four aims — wealth, pleasure, ethical conduct, or goodness, and enlightenment—and they are meant to be held in balance.” She then asks what your life would be like if you were to cultivate each of these areas equally?
So many thoughts came though my head when I read this. So many endless possibilities. What if we were to set the intention every morning to equally cultivate these four aims? How could our life experience change and be richer, more exciting, more fulfilling?
The road to enlightenment is long and difficult, and you should try not to forget snacks and magazines ~ Anne Lamott
So many people wonder what their purpose is in this life on earth. And what I often find is for most it isn’t something grandiose, where they reach thousands of people or get to work on their passion every day. Our purpose is to live this experience, this life, to its fullest. To be present in the experience. To know what it is to have a physical body and to live a human existence. From one end of the spectrum to the other – good and bad, hard and easy. Being human is our experience, and all it encompasses.
We’ve all set an intention before. No matter how big or small, and sometimes we might not even realize we did. To me an intention is different from a goal. An intention is a way of being or doing something. An intention retains your integrity and is closer to your heart than a goal. An intention is often a way of life, where a goal is a means to an end.
What are some intentions you have set before? How did that go? How did that feel? How have you changed or evolved as a human from setting that intention?
I would like to challenge your belief system, or at least challenge you to define what you believe. To put it in a context that you can relate, that is personal, instead of a general overview of what the world thinks.
What is wealth? To me wealth is abundance in all things. It is also the multitude of things that support me in my ability to sustain myself. Sometimes that sustenance comes through money, but often it does not. Wealth is being taken care of physically and having the means to take care of myself, on all levels.
It isn’t by getting out of the world that we become enlightened, but by getting into the world…by getting so tuned in that we can ride the waves of our existence and never get tossed because we become the waves ~ Ken Kesey
What is pleasure? To me it is pure joy! In anything: sex, looking at a flower, a nice glass of wine, meditation, yoga, seeing someone I love smile, heck seeing anyone smile!
What is ethical conduct? To me it is living within my standards. Being true to myself in spite of what others are saying and doing. It is ahimsa – cause no injury, do no harm. It is honoring myself and others, so that we may all walk peacefully together. I’d like to say we can walk peacefully with others and not have to be ‘besties.’ Walking peacefully together means, that we can see our differences and still move forward; our differences do not have to be our focus. We honor the differences in each other.
What is enlightenment? To me it means transcending this human experience for moments at a time. It is moving past the pettiness of the earth plane and human aspects. Knowing in our soul that we all come from the same place of beauty, the same Divine spark. And finding or experiencing enlightenment is different for everyone. It is important to do what works for you, and fit it in, even if it’s only a minute a day. When you are able to have these moments of pure bliss, even if just for a moment, you start operating from a different place, and at some point you realize you are living your whole day in that state of bliss.
