Clear And Ground Before You Shield

Shielding implies psychic defense. This is wonderful and necessary, but along with a strong shield one also needs good armor. My angels told me that for me to serve most effectively it was critical that my energy be clear, grounded and shielded daily. Early in my career as an empath, I made a practice of shielding at the beginning of every day. It worked very well initially. However, after a few weeks I noticed that in spite of this I was feeling drained at times, even slightly irritable and frustrated. Then I discovered the important of clearing and grounding.

Being shielded without first clearing any negative residual energy is akin to not showering or bathing, or letting garbage pile up in your home. Additionally, shielding without being grounded causes our energy and our purpose to be untethered, distracted and easily blown off course. Incorporating these practices allows for a much stronger shield for body, mind and spirit.

If you always clear and ground before you shield, your mind will be clearer, your emotions more balanced and your body stronger.  You’ll find yourself better equipped to deal with chaos at work or at home. Decisions and appropriate courses of action will flow more easily. You will be in essence more effectively linked to your natural intuition and inner guidance, without confusion or uncertainty.

I clear my energy every evening. I am a huge advocate of massage, acupuncture and energy work, such as Reiki, but it isn’t practical for me to incorporate that on a daily basis. Meditation, prayer and the visualization of cutting cords, are fabulous tools available to us daily.

I also like to reinforce these basic strategies with other techniques that are readily available. Since we shower or bath daily, water is my first and favorite clearing agent, along with essential oils. As you wash off the grime of the day and watch it go down the drain, so too is the effect of water on your energetic body by setting the intention.

Essential oils affect our minds and our emotions. Our sense of smell is estimated to be 10,000 times more acute than our other senses, and sensitive to some 10,000 chemical compounds. Once registered, scent travels faster to the brain than either sight or sound. The impact is fast, profound and healing. I have found essential oils to be very powerful.

Essential oils can be diffused or added to carrier oils, such as sweet almond, jojoba or coconut oil, before being added to your bath. Clearing oils that I like to use include Ylang Ylang, Geranium, Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Lavender, Copaiba, Frankincense, Lemon, Patchouli, Sage, Rose, Myrrh and Peppermint.

Another favorite clearing agent for me is Himalayan salt. The benefits are numerous, not the least of which are that it is detoxifying, relaxing and balancing. Salt baths can dry the skin, so this is only a weekly treat for me. Fill your bath with warm water, the level is up to you. Don’t make it too hot. Add two to three handfuls of Himalayan salt, as well as a few drops of one of the essential oils from the list above. I highly recommend lavender. It’s my go to oil for everything and it’s gentle on your skin. For the bath to really be effective you need to soak for at least 20 minutes. If you have a diffuser, you can diffuse some other essential oil listed above. Music is also a wonderful addition to this process.

Grounding your energy begins with the  body. Eating well should go without saying, but many empaths neglect themselves and either over-indulge, or forget to eat. Food is the body’s fuel.  Making small changes, such as not over-doing caffeine and alcohol and not smoking make a huge difference in being able to ground your body strongly.

Next, the breath is important in being grounded. Breathe! It sounds simple, and it is, but it is also very powerful. Intentional deep breaths naturally ground us. Call upon your higher self to be present. Invite your guides or angels, including Archangel Michael into this breathing ritual, to  firmly ground your spiritual and emotional energy with your physical energy. In this way you are grounded completely.

Grounding rituals do not have to be lengthy, but they do have to be consistent. You wouldn’t leave your house half dressed, so don’t leave home without grounding yourself for the day first. Again I incorporate essential oils for this. If I am pressed for time, I simply inhale one of these directly from the bottle or apply some on a cotton ball or handkerchief, so that I can have easy access to them during the day. Some of my favorite grounding Oils are Spruce, Rosewood, White Fur, Pine, Angelica, Cedarwood, Vetiver, Cinnamon, Bergamot, Jasmine, Spikenard, Neroli.

Once you are cleared and grounded you can use whatever shielding ritual, meditation, prayer or visualization you normally practice.
