Celtic spiritual tradition teaches that the soul shines all around the body, giving you a luminous glow. When you are open and make a connection with another person it is said that the “two souls flow together.” This deep connection with another spiritual being is called the anam cara. It means you have connected with your soul friend.
Your soul friend is a special person who brings light into your life and shows you total acceptance and friendship. In Celtic spirituality, when you discover your anam cara, this special friendship awakens your soul. Somehow you are now connected in a very old and ethereal union that knows no boundaries. Connecting with another soul is not always easy. We often have difficulty simply connecting with ourselves, which makes connecting with another soul truly challenging. But with age comes wisdom and we get to appreciate ourselves in a way our younger self never could. It becomes easier as we mature.
So, do you have to wait until your are middle-aged to connect with yourself and your anam cara? If you are in your 90s, is it too late? No to both. You are never too young or too old to meet and connect with your anam cara.
A great way to help you connect with yourself and others is through meditation. Meditation eliminates the outer noise and helps you to become quiet within. It helps you to connect with you. If you are not able to connect with yourself, how can you connect with another human being? It makes it difficult to say the least. Connecting with yourself has a ripple effect and impacts the world and all around you in a very positive way.

Meditation can appear imitating and difficult to do. Your mind is always racing, how can you possibly be quiet? You can with practice. Even if you do find it difficult to become quiet inside and shut out the outside world, the time that you spent trying is very relaxing. A great way to begin is to mediate for only three minutes a day. Take that time for you, make it special. You can slowly increase your time as you become more and more comfortable.
I love to use mantras when I meditate. It gives you a focus and also works on the emotional and physiological level. A great mantra to start with is “Sat Nam.” Say it over and over again, either out loud or silently. If you find your mind wandering, just bring it back. “Sat Nam” means your true self, your true identity. The Irish believe when you find your anam cara, you have arrived at that most sacred place; you discover peace within and a joyous life.
