Here, where I live, not many of us feel comfortable, or are too grieved by the state of the violence to talk or mention it. And if not spoken about, in our minds, perhaps rightly so it does not exist. It is like the mass version of the Heisenberg principle – the idea that if we do not see something, it does not exist. This may be a state in physics, which ended up in the idea that molecules define the charge once we have perceived them, yet it is not the same of our planet, our global selves, our networked economies and ecologies, the resolution of the future, the solution for all persons.
I have been looking at global emotional states for some time. Astrologers I speak to tell me it is due to the planetary influences, and when you know enough about Greek mythology and
the planets, you can see the connections. This may be the catalyst for some of these events, yet what makes them spread?
For one, I do not believe it’s a mass media consciousness. I look at people’s social networking pages, blogs and their lives, and for the most part they are still responding to their own lives and social circles here, and are not necessarily changing their posting habits. Some are, yet most people prefer oblivion and would rather read their social feeds than news feeds. This is a survival mechanism and should be respected.
Yet, I see there is some ‘contagion’ of panic, possibly an empathic ‘contagion’ that over-emphasizes news and political states. This can be seen in, for example, ‘root events’ that person’s in areas without media are acting out, and consequent, or other events that affect the population, which are also being played out at the same time. One could say it may be ‘networking’, yet to some extent, this applies to global joys and successes as well.
There is a global euphoria that also appears from time to time, and the intense indulgence in partying and celebrations, marked by even stranger and dangerous world events, leads me to believe that many of us are possibly suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and many of us would not be able to recognize it.
Often it is subtle – you don’t have to be in a war. You can be in an accident, or having nearly survived an accident, for example, can trigger it. Then there are larger triggers, but the overall effect is almost the same for most people – it can appear as overt aggression and mood swings, extreme depression, panic and substance abuse.
When people are under the effect of substances, you have to understand this is a form of temporary insanity. The stats are alarming and now entering the ‘mid-life’ population bulge. The emerging thirty percent of the world deemed 25 and younger, the ‘children’ are already not coping under multiple stresses such as violence, witnessing war and catastrophe, their parent’s job losses and their own future. We have to be cogent that they may feel we have nothing to live for.
Is this planet inconsolable? I read so many good stories too. For example today, the Philippines was gifted millions in aid for their rain forests. Or, nanotechnology will smooth out the nerves in the brain for people with neurological disorders, such as Multiple sclerosis (MS). They are now able to make synthetic corneal cells for anyone with vision losses, and if you read the news carefully, countries are gifting and helping each other despite the trauma we are all witness to.
Now, when you see a friend, that cannot comment on the state of the world, perhaps it is too much for them. Perhaps they have not survived an incident. Or perhaps they are in denial. I would like to think they are inconsolable, fearful and panicked, and a lot of understanding must go their way now, before they, or their children accept this as normal. In fact, this may be a state of what was termed ‘Mass Hysteria’ which was noted around the turn of the century – possibly with the introduction of technology. The change in our society raised our anxiety levels, perhaps to a point where people imagined events and even symptoms.
Other buzzwords you may want to research are Mass Hallucinations, Hysterical Contagion. This is not to mitigate the seriousness of our condition, yet in order to get the perspective to work an impossible problem, it’s important to focus on the successes and remember that some, if not many people right now are temporarily mentally unstable. If supported, these groups of people can get better within five years, yet I worry about support for their children.
Remember, there are good people out there. Remind yourself when you know you do good deeds, that you are indeed one, and that there are obviously more of you. There is me for one! And I have a few good people I can admit to – and with that, keep up the good fight.
Do not default into the ‘mean trend’ which is right now a superficial, verbal one-upmanship to ‘out hate’ each other, and make even more of a mockery of suffering. And if you see it, recognize that a sense of humor is sometimes the only way people can cope, even if it looks sick. For now, recognizing their break down is the only compassionate thing you can do for yourself.
I meet lots of people, some good, some very bad, but most of them are very afraid, and we should be compassionate of that.
