The High Priestess is the third card in the Major Arcana but is numbered as ‘2′. It’s because The Fool is associated with and numbered as ‘0′. The empowerment and insight shown in The Magician needs its’ other half, or female counterpart, the high priestess to realize its’ full potential.
While The Magician works with his magical tools laid out in front of him, the High Priestess possesses the gift of inner magic, or intuition. This is one of the cards that are associated most strongly with intuition, destiny, and psychic ability. This card is associated with the Moon and also represents the strength, insight, and divine wisdom associated with the feminine energies.
When you feel you are being moved by the creative spirit, you are in fact being moved by the divine feminine ~ Teri Degler
Tarot cards often depict the high priestess with a moon or water at her feet, and these elements also represents the feminine energy as well as the moon phases and tides. The two pillars on either side of the priestess represents male and female, and is Kabbalistic in nature. The black pillar to her right is inscribed with the letter B which is associated with ‘the mother’. The white pillar to the left is inscribed with a ‘J’ for ‘the Father’. The High Priestess also holds a scroll in her lap with the word “Tora” on it which represents the books of Moses or the Old Testament in other words. Some also consider this an anagram for the word ‘Tarot’.
When I deal with the High Priestess in a reading she represents feminine insight and intuition as well as the sense of ‘hidden knowledge’ or insight into a situation that can’t quite be explained. I often advise clients to listen to their intuition when this card is prominent in a reading and it tells me that they already have a strong sense of what is going on and may just be looking for confirmation. Signs and symbols in dreams, visions, or readings also come to the fore with this card, so it’s a great idea to jot down dreams and to take note of signs that seem to come out of nowhere when this card comes up prominently in a reading. She may also come to the fore when spiritual development becomes a priority for someone, especially if the client is female.
The High Priestess is one of the cards I find to be most mysterious and her strong connection to the realm of spirit and the divine in each of us makes her the perfect companion to the Magician. This card has one very clear message, and it is that it’s time to listen to our instincts. Intuition never leads us astray.
