Tarot: The Fool Steps Out Into The Unknown

Get a FREE psychic reading right now at PsychicAccess.comThe Tarot deck consists of two parts: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Minor Arcana deals with the everyday changes and events in our lives, and is very similar to an ordinary deck of playing cards.

The Major Arcana is a pictorial representation of someone’s life path and the significant, and often life-changing experiences we have along the way. The Fool is the first card in the Major Arcana, and since we have entered the New Year, I feel this is a really appropriate time to talk about this particular card and what it symbolizes, and what it could indicate in a reading.

The Fool card represents a new journey or a new adventure in life, and may also indicate a younger person. This is the time in our lives when we are most innocent and tend to give everything and everyone the benefit of the doubt. This card also speaks of self knowledge and the quest to learn more, not just about your environment, but about yourself.

When in doubt, make a fool of yourself. There is a microscopically thin line between being brilliantly creative and acting like the most gigantic idiot on earth. So what the hell, leap ~ Cynthia High Mel!

The Fool also represents someone who can be lighthearted but also someone who tends to speak the truth and doesn’t mince his or her words. The Fool always has a more masculine feel to me, so to me this usually indicates a younger male. There is always an impulsive, adventurous energy when this card comes up around someone, so they may be on the verge of making some changes, or feeling restless, as if it’s time to break out of the mold somehow.

This first card of the Tarot is associated with the planet Uranus, which is a planet of change, revolution, and liberation. This is often why the fool card indicates an opportunity to break out of a boring routine or to take a chance on something, or someone new. The number of this card is zero, and this to me symbolizes unfulfilled potential. The fool is all about what could be and what might be, and that initial leap of faith that will get the process started.

The wonderful thing about the Fool is that although he starts his journey as an impulsive youth, he has the potential to master his abilities and to find wisdom through his experiences. In the deck I use, the Crowley Thoth deck, the Fool is shown with everything around him that could be his, and that it’s literally there for the taking.

In the Tarot deck, the Fool is depicted as a young man about to step off a cliff into empty air. Most people assume that the Fool will fall. But we don’t see it happen, and a Fool doesn’t know that he’s subject to the laws of gravity. Against all odds, he just might float ~ Richard Kadrey

The Hebrew letter at the bottom of the card is called Aleph, which means “ox”. It is also similar to the Hebrew letter ‘A’. This card also carries the elemental symbol for Air. Air is all about movement and communication, learning, and change. So when this card symbolizes a person, he is likely to be very talkative and very inquisitive.

This card is all about the unknown or unfulfilled potential. It’s about the ‘what if’ rather than being about the ‘will’ or ‘when’. It’s that first step that sets everything else in motion.

With 2013 ahead of us, it’s a great time to consider what the Fool could tell us, and I feel that the overwhelming message here is to be open to change and to enjoy the journey.
